In a stunning sequence of events, a newborn baby was subjected to a medical mishap at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Kerala's Palakkad district. The tragic vaccine overdose that resulted from the incident's five-day course has put the infant in the hospital and under strict watch.
According to local media sources, the terrifying occurrence happened on a Wednesday when concerned parents brought their five-day-old kid to the PHC Pirayiri to receive the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis. In contrast to the anticipated single dosage of the BCG vaccine, fate took a wrong turn when the newborn was mistakenly exposed to a series of vaccines.
The distressed parents, Nadirsha and Sibina, brought their newborn baby to the PHC in hopes of a quick vaccination treatment. They went to the immunization booth with the prescription in hand after visiting the doctor. When they expressed their desire to obtain the BCG vaccine, the encounter with the on-call nurse, Charulatha, took a regrettable turn. The nurse treated the parents rudely rather than with a gracious response.
A puzzling series of events culminated with the injection of the BCG vaccine into the child's left upper arm. But this was just the start of a worsening medical incident. Along with the injection of two oral vaccines, it was reportedly reported that two additional vaccines were injected into the infant's thighs.
The parents were shocked by this worrying development and went back to the doctor right once to bring it up. The nurse in charge of administering the immunizations was suspended as a result of the authorities' prompt response to the parents' complaint. The District Medical Officer quickly began an investigation to learn more about the incident's circumstances.
Tragically, after the vaccination trauma, the infant's condition deteriorated and was marked by fever. The infant was consequently taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Palakkad District Hospital, where doctors carefully watched after his or her health and welfare.
This incredibly distressing episode serves as a reminder of the value of meticulous medical protocols and effective communication within the healthcare system. The goal of the ongoing inquiry by the authorities is to ascertain how such a serious protocol violation could have happened and how to avoid future occurrences of this kind.
