Dr. Sandip Sonara, a gynaecological laparoscopic surgeon based in Ahmedabad, has become India’s first surgeon to receive the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) accreditation as a Master Surgeon in Multidisciplinary Endometriosis Care.

This accreditation is granted by SRC, a nonprofit patient safety organization based in the United States that evaluates and recognizes medical professionals and facilities meeting high standards of surgical quality and patient safety.

Dr. Sonara’s recognition places him among a select group of global specialists accredited for expert care in complex endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus and can cause chronic pain and fertility issues. The accreditation recognizes his skill in managing advanced surgical cases and delivering multidisciplinary care that integrates diagnostic imaging and fertility-preserving laparoscopic techniques.

What the SRC Master Surgeon Accreditation Means

The Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) was established in 2003 as an independent, nonprofit organization focused on improving healthcare quality and patient safety worldwide. SRC develops and administers accreditation programs for hospitals, surgical teams, and individual clinicians. Its accreditations are based on rigorous evaluation of clinical outcomes, safety protocols, and procedural standards.

The Master Surgeon designation is awarded to individual surgeons who meet SRC’s stringent criteria for expertise, outcomes, and best practices in their specialty area. These criteria typically include documented surgical volume, use of comprehensive clinical pathways, adherence to standardized procedures, quality data monitoring, and multidisciplinary care involvement, reflecting a sustained commitment to patient safety and quality improvement.

This PSC quality mark is internationally recognized and independent of any single hospital’s accreditation, allowing surgeons to carry the credential with them across practice settings.

Dr. Sonara’s Professional Background and Contributions

Dr. Sandip Sonara trained in M.S. Obstetrics and Gynaecology from B. J. medical college, Ahmedabad and has been practising advanced minimally invasive surgery, particularly in endometriosis treatment. He uses detailed imaging (ultrasound and MRI mapping) to guide surgery aimed at preserving fertility while treating complex disease.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Sonara has contributed to medical training initiatives in laparoscopic surgery, helping educate surgeons nationally and internationally. He has also led awareness campaigns on early diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis.

Understanding Endometriosis and Multidisciplinary Care

Endometriosis is a chronic condition where endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus, commonly affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining. Symptoms may include pelvic pain, painful menstruation, painful intercourse, and fertility difficulties making accurate diagnosis and comprehensive management essential. Treatment options range from pain management and hormonal therapies to surgical excision for advanced disease. Multidisciplinary care involves integrating surgical expertise with fertility counselling, imaging diagnostics, and pain management to optimize outcomes.

Laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique using small incisions and specialized instruments, is widely used to treat complex endometriosis and is associated with shorter recovery times and better fertility outcomes when performed by experienced surgeons.

By becoming SRC-accredited, Dr. Sonara joins a global community of Master Surgeons recognized for safe, high-quality care in specific surgical disciplines.

SRC’s accreditation process emphasizes continuous quality improvement, patient safety, and the adoption of best practice protocols, with periodic reassessment to ensure ongoing compliance with standards.
