Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: A senior emergency medicine doctor at AIIMS Bhopal is in critical condition after a suspected suicide attempt at her residence late Thursday night. The incident has left the hospital community shaken and raised renewed concerns about the mental health pressures faced by medical professionals.

The doctor, identified as Dr. Rashmi Verma, an Assistant Professor in the Emergency Department, was found unconscious at her home around 10.30 pm. Her husband, Dr. Ratan Verma, an orthopaedic surgeon, discovered her condition and immediately rushed her to the AIIMS emergency unit.

Hospital officials confirmed that Dr. Verma had allegedly injected a poisonous substance. When she arrived at the hospital, her pulse and heartbeat had dropped dangerously low. Doctors initiated emergency resuscitation, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, before shifting her to the intensive care unit.

Condition Remains Critical in ICU

AIIMS Bhopal PRO Dr. Ketan Mehra stated that the doctor remains on ventilator support and is in critical condition. Hospital sources said the next 48 to 72 hours are crucial for her recovery.

Senior doctors from multiple departments are monitoring her condition continuously. The hospital has not released further medical details, citing patient confidentiality.

No Suicide Note or Message Found

Police officials confirmed that no suicide note or message was recovered from the residence. Preliminary assessment suggests that there were no visible signs of disturbance at the house before the incident.

AIIMS ACP Rajnish Kashyap Kaul said that a formal police investigation would begin after official intimation from the hospital. Authorities are waiting to record statements once the doctor’s condition improves.

At this stage, officials have refrained from speculating on the motive behind the suspected attempt.

About the Doctor

Dr. Rashmi Verma is a trained physician with several years of experience in emergency medicine. She completed her MBBS from MLN Medical College in Prayagraj and later pursued her MD in General Medicine from BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur.

Colleagues describe her as a committed clinician who handled high pressure emergency cases on a daily basis. Many at AIIMS Bhopal expressed shock and concern, saying the incident has deeply affected the hospital staff.

Investigation Awaited

Police will examine all aspects once the inquiry formally begins, including personal, professional and medical factors. Hospital authorities have assured full cooperation with investigators.
