Andhra Pradesh to Launch Statewide ‘AI Doctor’ Service for 5 Crore Residents
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has announced plans to roll out a statewide “AI Doctor” digital health advisory service, aimed at providing free preliminary medical guidance to nearly five crore residents.
According to reports, the initiative was announced by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who said the system had already been piloted in select villages before being scaled up across the state.
Pilot Phase and Statewide Expansion
The AI Doctor service was first tested in Kuppam and Chittor districts to assess usability and response accuracy. Following the pilot’s implementation, the state government decided to expand the platform statewide.
Officials stated that the initiative is designed to improve access to healthcare information, particularly in rural and underserved areas where specialist consultations may not be readily available.
The rollout aims to digitally connect residents through existing health infrastructure, including village secretariats and health workers.
How the AI Doctor Will Work
The digital health advisory system will be integrated with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) framework.
Key Features:
Residents will access the service using their Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID.
The AI platform will collect basic symptom information.
It will provide preliminary health advice and guidance on next steps.
In cases requiring in-person consultation, it will direct users to nearby healthcare facilities.
The system is intended to function as a decision-support and triage tool, not as a replacement for licensed medical professionals.
Through integration with digital health records, the AI Doctor can reference patient history (with consent), enabling more context-aware responses.
Objective: Expanding Digital Health Access
The Andhra Pradesh government stated that the platform seeks to:
Reduce burden on primary health centres
Offer timely preliminary medical guidance
Improve early identification of symptoms
Promote preventive healthcare
Officials indicated that the service is free of cost and aims to cover approximately five crore residents statewide.
Digital Health in India: Broader Context
India has been expanding digital health infrastructure under national programs such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which enables:
Unique digital health IDs
Electronic health record integration
Interoperable healthcare systems
Several states have introduced telemedicine and e-health platforms in recent years to improve access in rural regions.
Role and Limitations of AI in Healthcare
Artificial intelligence tools in healthcare are typically used for:
Symptom triage
Clinical decision support
Diagnostic imaging assistance
Risk prediction models
However, AI systems provide advisory outputs based on algorithms and datasets and are not substitutes for clinical examination or physician judgment.
Healthcare experts generally emphasize that digital health tools must operate within regulatory frameworks and maintain data privacy standards.
