A man in Assam has been detained by the police because he was allegedly posing as a doctor. The man also had fake medical credentials which helped him to get employed at various healthcare facilities.
The accused is identified as Ahmed Ali. He was known as Dr. Yakub Ali Ahmed by patients.
Ahmed was employed at the Jorhat City Orthopedic Hospital as in charge of the Intensive Care Unit.
The allegations against him came to light while he worked at the same facility.
According to reports by NKTV, he was arrested on October 24.
According to the reports, a complaint was lodged with the police against Ahmed over his medical credentials. The complaint challenged the authenticity of his academics and degrees related to his medical career.
The Jorhat police acted on the matter as soon as the complaint was lodged. Ahmed was detained, and he was questioned about his educational qualifications and professional history.
The police are mainly concerned with his fake credentials and the verification process that hospitals are following while employing medical staff because Ahmed was in charge of the ICU unit, which handles critically ill patients.
According to a report by India Today, police revealed the individual faced previous charges in Chabua for similar misconduct. The fact that he was hired by another hospital is expected to raise serious questions regarding the vetting process of his professional background and the details of his employment.
Information regarding his past work history, his length of service at Jorhat City Orthopaedic Hospital, and the volume of patients under his care remains unreleased.
Additionally, it remains unknown if management cross-checked his medical degrees and registration before hiring him as the ICU head.
This case showcases the need to verify doctors before seeking treatment from them.
Patients in India can verify a doctor’s credentials online by checking the doctor’s registration number and license through the relevant state medical council or the National Medical Commission's official records.
Jorhat Police has not made any other details about the case public.
