A man posing as a doctor was arrested after he allegedly entered the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Raipur while impersonating a medical professional. The incident came to light on Wednesday when alert hospital staff noticed discrepancies in his identity and stopped him before he could move freely within the hospital premises.
The accused has been identified as 38 year old Durjan Singh Goyal. Police said he had no medical qualification but attempted to pass himself off as a specialist doctor by wearing a medical coat and carrying a forged identity card.
The impersonation attempt was uncovered when Goyal failed to produce valid credentials when questioned by hospital authorities. His inability to explain his role or present authentic documents immediately raised red flags.
Security guard Suryakant Mishra and deputy nursing superintendent Jekka Pradeep Kumar intervened and detained him. Their quick action ensured that the accused did not gain access to patients or restricted clinical areas. Hospital officials then informed the Amanaka police, who took him into custody.
During questioning, Goyal reportedly told police that he had always wanted to become a doctor. Investigators said this desire led him to pose as one, despite having no formal training or qualifications in medicine.
Police recovered the forged identity card he was carrying at the time of his detention. A case has been registered against him for impersonation and related offences.
The Amanaka police are continuing their investigation to determine whether the accused interacted with patients or hospital staff before being stopped. Officials are also examining whether he accessed any sensitive areas or misrepresented himself to members of the public inside the hospital.
Police said further action would depend on the findings of the investigation.
Following the incident, the AIIMS Raipur administration said it has strengthened security protocols and reinforced identity verification procedures for hospital personnel. Officials stressed the importance of vigilance in a large public healthcare institution that sees heavy daily footfall.
Lt Gen Ashok Jindal, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Raipur, said strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to deceive patients or misuse the hospital’s name. He also urged patients and visitors to immediately report any suspicious behavior to hospital authorities.
