A patient's family has alleged a breach of medical confidentiality after the patient's Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) status was reportedly displayed above a hospital bed at the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College (LLRM), Meerut. The family claimed the information was visible to other patients and visitors, raising concerns about patient privacy.

Family Alleges Disclosure of Patient's Medical Information

According to the family, hospital staff placed a paper above the patient's bed identifying the patient as HCV-positive. The relatives objected to the display, stating that it exposed sensitive medical information to people entering the ward, as reported in TOI.

The family subsequently raised the matter with hospital authorities, alleging that the patient's confidential health information had been disclosed without consent.

Family Alleges ₹50,000 Demand for Repeat Surgery

According to TOI, The patient's family also alleged that doctors demanded an additional ₹50,000 for a second hip surgery after the patient's initial operation reportedly failed. According to the report, the patient's son, who works as a daily wage laborer, said he had already arranged ₹50,000 for the first surgery and was unable to afford another payment.

The family further alleged that they were asked to purchase basic medical supplies, including cotton bandages, from private shops outside the hospital and that their complaints to hospital authorities did not receive a response.

LLRM Medical College Principal Dr. R.C. Gupta told TOI that the matter was not yet in his cognizance and that it would be looked into.

Why Protecting Patient Privacy Is Important in Hepatitis C Care

Patient confidentiality is a fundamental ethical responsibility in healthcare and helps build trust between patients and healthcare providers.

According to an article published in the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, medical information should generally remain confidential and be shared only with healthcare professionals directly involved in a patient's care, unless disclosure is required by law or justified by an overriding public interest.

Protecting the privacy of individuals diagnosed with conditions such as Hepatitis C is particularly important because disclosure of their health status may expose them to social stigma or discrimination. The authors also note that maintaining confidentiality encourages patients to seek timely medical care and share accurate health information, both of which are essential for effective diagnosis and treatment.¹

Hospital Yet to Issue Detailed Clarification

At the time of reporting, no detailed public explanation had been issued regarding why the patient's HCV status was displayed above the hospital bed or whether an internal inquiry had been initiated.

The incident has drawn attention to patient confidentiality in healthcare settings and the need to balance infection-control practices with the protection of personal medical information.
