The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has clarified that its two-year Post-MBBS Diploma courses are not affected by the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision to phase out the PG Diploma courses covered by its recent public notice.

In an official notice dated July 8, 2026, NBEMS stated that the NMC Public Notice, dated June 19, 2026, does not pertain to the Post-MBBS Diploma courses conducted by the board.

The NMC move concerns the conversion of PG Diploma seats into corresponding Postgraduate Broad Specialty Degree seats, or MD/MS seats, from the 2027–28 academic year onwards. The NMC listed the related notice on its website on June 22, 2026.

NMC Notice Does Not Apply to NBEMS Diploma Courses

NBEMS addressed its clarification to applicants or accredited hospitals, institutions, and medical colleges.

Referring to the NMC public notice, the board stated that the discontinuation of PG Diploma courses after the 2026–27 academic session “does not pertain to the various Post-MBBS Diploma courses” conducted by NBEMS.

The clarification means that the NMC notice should not be applied to NBEMS-run Post-MBBS Diploma programmes.

NBEMS Says Its Diploma Programmes Are Distinct

NBEMS stated that its Diploma courses are distinct programmes and were separately notified through a Gazette Notification dated August 6, 2020.

Official NMC Gazette records list the August 6, 2020 notification under “Addition of Broad Specialty Diploma Courses,” describing them as two-year courses at the post-MBBS level.

The notification covered eight Post-MBBS Broad Specialty Diploma qualifications:

  • Diploma in Anesthesiology

  • Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

  • Diploma in Paediatrics

  • Diploma in Family Medicine

  • Diploma in Ophthalmology

  • Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology

  • Diploma in Radio Diagnosis

  • Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Disease

These qualifications were separately notified under the NBEMS framework, which is the distinction highlighted in the board’s July 8 clarification.

NBEMS Diploma Courses Will Continue

NBEMS explicitly stated that the discontinuation mentioned in the NMC public notice has no bearing on its Diploma courses.

“Stakeholders are therefore advised to note that the discontinuation of Diploma courses mentioned in the NMC public notice has no bearing on NBEMS Diploma courses, which shall continue as per the mandate,” the board said.

The July 8 notice therefore confirms that NBEMS Post-MBBS Diploma courses will continue under their existing mandate and are outside the scope of the NMC phase-out referenced in the clarification.

NBEMS Directs Stakeholders to Communication Portal

For queries or assistance, NBEMS advised stakeholders to contact the board through its Communication Portal.

According to the notice, the portal can be accessed through the “Communication Web Portal” quick link under the “Contact Us” menu on the NBEMS website.

The clarification establishes the current official position: the NMC notice concerning the discontinuation of PG Diploma courses after the 2026–27 academic session does not pertain to NBEMS Post-MBBS Diploma courses. The board said its Diploma programmes will continue as per their mandate.
