Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar is celebrated as one of the greatest opening batters in cricket history. But long before he became the “Little Master,” Gavaskar narrowly escaped a hospital mix-up that could have completely changed his life.
An old story from his birth resurfaced and once again captured the imagination of cricket lovers across the world. According to Gavaskar’s own recollections, he was accidentally switched with another newborn shortly after birth in a Bombay hospital in 1949.
The incident was later detailed by Gavaskar in interviews and in his autobiography Sunny Days. A few days after his birth, one of his uncles visited the hospital ward and noticed something unusual.
During an earlier visit, the uncle had observed a tiny mark near the baby’s left ear. But when he returned, the child lying beside Gavaskar’s mother no longer had that identifying feature. The observation immediately raised alarm within the family.
Hospital staff and relatives reportedly began searching through the ward before discovering the real Gavaskar lying beside a fisherwoman’s bed. The babies had accidentally been exchanged.
The quick observation by Gavaskar’s uncle reportedly prevented what could have become one of the most extraordinary identity mix-ups in Indian sporting history.
Over the years, Gavaskar has often credited his uncle, affectionately called “Nan-Kaka,” for spotting the mistake in time.
The former India captain has also joked about the incident in public appearances. In one interview, Gavaskar humorously suggested that those early moments beside the fisherwoman perhaps explained why he occasionally “fished” outside the off stump during his batting career.
The story has since become one of the most fascinating anecdotes associated with Indian cricket.
The incident feels even more unbelievable considering what Gavaskar eventually achieved.
Born on July 10, 1949, Gavaskar went on to become one of India’s greatest Test batters and among the finest opening batters in cricket history. He became the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs and retired with 34 Test centuries, which was a world record at the time.
His fearless batting against the fearsome West Indies pace attacks of the 1970s and 1980s earned him enormous respect around the world. Gavaskar’s discipline, technique, and consistency helped shape Indian cricket for generations.
Stories like Gavaskar’s accidental hospital mix-up sound shocking today because hospitals now follow strict newborn safety protocols to prevent such incidents.
Most hospitals place matching ID bands on babies and parents immediately after birth. Staff verify these bands before moving or handing over a newborn. Many facilities also use RFID-enabled tags that trigger alarms if a baby is taken outside authorized areas.
Maternity wards now have restricted access, surveillance cameras, and secure entry systems to keep unauthorized people away from newborn care units. Hospitals also train staff to follow detailed identification procedures and respond quickly to security concerns.
Some hospitals additionally use digital footprint records and electronic monitoring systems to strengthen infant identification and tracking. Parents are also encouraged to verify staff identities and stay involved in newborn safety procedures.
Because of these modern safeguards, infant switching cases are now considered extremely rare.
The story continues to resonate because it highlights how a seemingly small moment can alter history forever.
Had Gavaskar not been identified correctly in the hospital ward, Indian cricket may never have witnessed one of its greatest icons. For cricket fans, it remains one of the sport’s most remarkable “what if” stories.
