Food Hygiene Crisis: Lizard Found in School Lunch, 30 Students Hospitalized

The quality and hygiene standards of the food are decreasing and affecting the health of the consumers. Recently in Mumbai's Dharavi, about 30 students were rushed to a private clinic after a lizard was found in the Sambar that was served during lunchtime on Wednesday.

Roughly, 30 students of Dharavi’s Kamaraj Memorial English High and Junior College were rushed to a private clinic in Sion after a lizard was found in the Sambhar that served on one of the plates of the students.

As per the Shahu Nagar Police, the lunch was not directly provided by the school, it was provided by a nearby JP Hotel.

An official said that the parents who were unable to prepare lunch and breakfast for their children had tied up with the JP hotel. Every day JP Hotel provides lunch to school children and it generally comprises idli, Sambhar, and other South Indian food.

This incident happened on Wednesday, after the food was served, one of the students noticed a lizard floating on the Sambhar that was served to him. Alarmed by the incident, the student started vomiting by inserting his finger down his throat. Viewing the situation, other students also started imitating him by throwing up. Most of the affected students are from class 5 and 6. According to the standard operating procedure, students were immediately taken to a nearby Ayush Clinic for food poisoning testing.

The hospital administration notified that no student suffered food poisoning and all of them are sent were back home with their parents.

DCP Tejaswi Satpute, Zone 5 said that the FDA collected the food samples for examination and they will move forward after the results of the report. He also said that no parent reached them or filed any case with them. A senior FDA official said that they gathered the samples and for testing, they were sent to a laboratory.

A similar incident happened in Shahapur sub-district, Thane, where 117 students, including 48 girls, were hospitalized due to food poisoning after consuming pulao and gulab jamun.
