Following over nine months of inquiry, Dr. Karamvir Singh Dhillon, a doctor at a private hospital in Rajpura, has been charged with criminal breach of trust and dowry by the Amritsar Rural Police. The police registered the case on June 15 under Sections 498-A and 406 of the Indian Penal Code. Dr. Dhillon, originally from Ghumar Mandi in Ludhiana, is yet to be arrested as investigations continue.

Dr. Dhillon married Arshpreet Kaur, also a doctor, around three and a half years ago. Arshpreet Kaur, who lives in Bhure Gill village, filed a complaint with the Amritsar Rural Police in September 2023. She claimed that after their marriage in November 2020, her husband started demanding dowry and asked for five acres of land to be transferred to his name. When she refused, he allegedly subjected her to physical and mental harassment and eventually threw her out of the house.

According to Arshpreet, the situation worsened when she refused to meet her husband’s demands for additional dowry and land.

Arshpreet detailed in her complaint that her family had given her dowry according to their capacity when she married Karamvir. She completed her MBBS at Sri Guru Ramdas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Vallah, where her husband also worked at the associated hospital before moving to a private hospital in Rajpura. After he switched jobs, the couple moved to Rajpura, and she also started working at the same hospital.

According to Arshpreet, the situation worsened when she refused to meet her husband’s demands for additional dowry and land. She alleges that her husband’s actions were a calculated attempt to pressurize her for material gains. Her complaint led to a police investigation carried out by an officer of SP rank, which confirmed her accusations against Dr. Dhillon. However, allegations against other members of his family could not be substantiated.

The case against Dr. Dhillon highlights ongoing issues related to dowry and domestic abuse. The police have confirmed that they are actively investigating the matter and have yet to arrest Dr. Dhillon. This development follows Arshpreet’s persistent efforts to seek justice for the alleged mistreatment and demands placed on her.
