A Kolkata court has granted bail to the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor. The court's decision was made after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a charge sheet within the statutory time limit of 90 days.
The bail was granted on conditions of a surety bond of INR 2,000 each, and both Ghosh and Mondal have been directed to appear before the CBI as and when called. The case pertains to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.
The CBI took over the investigation into the case in August, and the Supreme Court had observed that the trial would likely be concluded within one month.
The CBI's failure to file a chargesheet within the stipulated time frame has resulted in the bail being granted to Ghosh and Mondal. It had triggered massive protests across Kolkata and other parts of India, demanding justice for the victim. It is worth noting that Ghosh will remain in judicial custody as he is also booked in a case related to financial irregularities.
The case will continue to be investigated by the CBI, and further action will be taken in accordance with the law. The victim's family has expressed disappointment over the bail grant to the accused, stating that they had expected a faster investigation and trial. The family has also demanded that the CBI expedite the investigation and ensure that justice is delivered to the victim.
