The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has released the results for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) held in June 2025. The outcome has stunned both candidates and educators.

Only 18.61% of candidates passed the FMGE—a steep decline compared to December 2024, when the pass rate stood around 29.19%. Out of approximately 37,207 registered candidates, around 36,034 appeared for the test, with 29,327 failing to qualify. The exam, conducted on July 26, 2025, left 1,168 absent and 5 candidates’ results withheld pending further investigation.

It was earlier reported that a similar pass percentage of 18.61%, underlining that 81.3% of examinees failed the screening test.

The withheld results stem from cases under review by the Examination Ethics Committee or court proceedings.

Candidates are set to receive their scorecards from August 21, 2025, via the official NBEMS platform. FMGE pass certificates will be issued in person after thorough verification of identity and credentials, a process that NBEMS will notify separately.

This sharp dip in success rates follows a pattern of low clearance percentages in recent years: December 2024 saw a 29.19% pass rate, June 2024 was at roughly 21.6%, June 2023 plunged to about 12.8%, and December 2023 hovered around 21%.

Experts emphasize that the FMGE acts as a mandatory qualifying examination for Indian citizens with medical degrees from abroad who wish to practice in India. The persistently low pass rates suggest deep challenges and arguably reflect both the exam’s difficulty and the preparedness of foreign medical graduates.

This June 2025 result stands out as particularly stark. With only 6,707 out of over 36,000 appearing candidates passing, the failure of over 29,300 students. Experts say that this data highlights an urgent need to address the gap in readiness and support for foreign-trained medical graduates aiming to serve in India.
