A life-threatening case of acute jaundice, followed by acute liver failure, was overcome within 24 hours thanks to a mother’s sacrifice and an entire community’s support. Alan, a young boy from Mundakayam Chittadi, Kottayam, Kerala, faced a dire medical emergency that required urgent intervention.

He was admitted to Rajagiri Hospital in Kochi, where a team of doctors, including Dr. Biju Chandran, a multi-organ transplant surgeon, and hepatologists Dr. John Menachery and Dr. Cyriac Abby Phillips, determined that a liver transplant was the only solution. The team acted swiftly to address the critical situation.

Although locating a donor for such a procedure can often take days or even months, Alan’s mother, Reena, emerged as the perfect donor within hours. Her willingness to donate a portion of her liver saved her son’s life. Hospital officials remarked on the speed with which the necessary formalities were completed, enabling the transplant to be scheduled the very next day.

In addition to Reena’s courage, the financial burden of the surgery was alleviated by contributions from the local community. The people of Alan’s village, his school, Edakunnam Government School, and the Malanad Development Society—a local social service organization—collaborated to raise funds for the procedure and post-operative care.

The surgery was performed successfully, marking a triumph of medical expertise, familial love, and collective goodwill. Dr. Biju Chandran, who led the surgery, expressed his admiration for the community’s efforts. “This success is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community, driven by compassion and love, unites for a common cause,” he stated.

Currently, Alan is recovering at home, with doctors monitoring his progress closely.
