A 20-year-old second-year medical student from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found dead in her room at the ESI quarters in Kamarhati. She lived with her mother, who works as a doctor at the same hospital, while her father, a senior bank official, is stationed in Mumbai.
The incident came to light when the young woman’s mother tried to contact her multiple times but received no response. Growing anxious, she went to her daughter’s room and, after finding the door locked and getting no answer, forced it open. Inside, she discovered her daughter hanging.
With the help of neighbors, she rushed her to the hospital, but doctors declared her dead-on arrival. Authorities were informed, and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital.
The police have initiated an investigation after registering a case of unnatural death. No suicide note was found, but preliminary reports suggest she may have been struggling with depression. However, officials have stated that all possible angles will be explored before drawing any conclusions.
The family has not lodged any formal complaint, and the body was cremated after the necessary legal procedures. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities awaiting the post-mortem report for further insights into the cause of death.
