A 23-year-old man who was admitted to Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh Hospital (India's one of the largest healthcare facilities) was transfused with the wrong blood group which led to complications in the functioning of both his kidneys.

The patient is identified as Sachin Sharma, son of Mahesh Chandra Sharma. He is a resident of Raipur village of Bandikui. He was badly injured in a road accident in Kotputli city on February 11 and referred to the trauma center in Jaipur, where he was admitted to the SMS hospital on February 12. The hospital authorities asserted that he needed an emergency blood transfusion. The hospital staff took the patient’s blood sample for test. After conducting a test they gave a receipt to get AB positive group blood for the patient. The patient was transfused with AB-positive blood during the operation and shifted to the orthopedic ward of the hospital.

On the next day, after the operation, the patient complained of stomach and back pain. The doctors performed several tests on the patient and shifted him to the ICU after his condition worsened. He was tested again on January 14. After the test, they came to know that the patient’s blood group was O-positive.

The hospital authorities said that the patient's blood group was O-positive and he was transfused with AB-positive blood group. Due to the wrong blood transfusion, the patient is in critical condition leading to severe illness and kidney failure. Since the incident, the patient has undergone dialysis three times which further deteriorated his health condition.

The relatives of Sachin said that it was the ward boy who took the blood sample instead of the nursing staff, and he asked them to get the AB-positive blood group for the patient. They doubted that the ward boy himself conducted the test and asked to bring the wrong blood group.

Sachin’s father submitted a memorandum in the name of SDM to the Tahsildar under the leadership of the BJP district general secretary Bhavani Shankar Bhardwaj on Thursday. He urged action against the two guilty doctors and other staff.

SMS Hospital Superintendent Achal Sharma said that a special team has been formed to investigate the issue and action will be taken consequently.  He also said that a medical team has been appointed to take care of the patient and the patient has shown improvement.
