A tragic incident unfolded at Jaya Hospital in Kheri district on December 23, 2024, when a newborn died shortly after birth following a cesarean section. The family of the deceased child has accused the hospital staff of negligence, citing a delay in the operation and insufficient medical support. The father, Vishal Bajpayi, claimed that the surgery was carried out after several hours of waiting due to a shortage of medical staff, and no medical tests or diagnoses were provided before the procedure. Bajpayi further alleged that the doctors fled the hospital after the baby’s death, leaving the family in distress.

Family’s Account

Vishal Bajpayi, a resident of Gola town, said his wife, Nancy Bajpayi, was initially advised to undergo a natural delivery, but after several hours, she was told that a cesarean operation was necessary. According to Bajpayi, the surgery was delayed and conducted late at night without proper consultation. After the operation, the newborn was declared dead, and doctors Anshu Verma, A K Agrawal, Farhan Gazi, and Mohammad Shariq are said to have fled the hospital.

The family members were reportedly given conflicting reasons by the hospital staff regarding the cause of death. Nancy was later referred to the district women’s hospital for further care, where doctors found excessive incisions and poorly done sutures on her body.

Police Action

In response to the complaint filed by Vishal Bajpayi, an FIR was lodged against five doctors, including the hospital’s managing director, Dr. Zaib Khan. The police have charged the doctors under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Gola police station SHO Chandra Shekhar confirmed that the complaint was filed three weeks after the incident, explaining that the delay was due to the husband tending to his ailing wife before lodging the report.

Doctors’ Defense

Dr. Zaib Khan, the hospital's managing director, declined direct comment on the incident, stating that it was Dr. Anshu Verma, the head of the medical panel, who could provide further explanation. Dr. Verma defended the actions taken at the hospital. He said that Nancy Bajpayi was referred to Jaya Clinic by a primary health center for a cesarean after complications with her pregnancy. Verma added that Vishal Bajpayi was reportedly intoxicated at the time and that the family members delayed the decision for over three hours before agreeing to the surgery. According to Dr. Verma, the baby's death occurred after passing meconium in the uterus and aspirating the material during the cesarean operation.

Investigation Underway

The police investigation into the case continues, and the hospital’s medical practices and procedures during the delivery will be thoroughly examined.
