In a stunning show of compassion and ingenuity, Bengaluru's 16-year-old Avani Radheshyam has created 'OncoCaregiver,' a mobile app that will assist cancer caregivers. Understanding the usually neglected plight of caregivers, Avani's project seeks to offer end-to-end support, especially targeting those in rural regions who might not have access to necessary resources.
Avani's motivation for 'OncoCaregiver' comes from her own life. Seeing her parents deal with the intricacies of taking care of her grandmother and aunt, both stage 2 cancer patients, she noticed the emotional and practical challenges caregivers face. "They were coping with complicated treatments, making tough choices, and offering constant care, all while attempting to be strong," Avani explained.
While many resources are available to cancer patients, Avani recognized that a large deficit lies in the specific resources for caregivers. Her application fills this need by providing:
Emotional Support: Counseling and peer support group access to ease stress and prevent burnout.
Medical Guidance: Easy-to-read information about treatment plans, medication regimens, and symptom relief.
Logistical Support: Features for appointment booking, transportation, and organizing day-to-day care routines.
On the official OncoCaregiver website, users have shared several testimonials:
When my wife was diagnosed, I had no idea how to manage all the appointments, medication, and necessary tests. One day, I couldn't find the right lab for a critical test. OncoCaregiver helped me find a lab that was open late, allowing me to get the test done without delay. It's been a huge relief knowing I have access to all the resources I need in one place.

Recognizing the special challenges rural caregivers encounter, 'OncoCaregiver' is built to be highly usable with easy-to-use interfaces and multilingual capabilities to make it accessible. The app is meant to empower caregivers by providing knowledge and skills to enable them to care effectively, no matter where they are.
Avani's initiative highlights the critical role caregivers play in the cancer care continuum. By providing targeted support, 'OncoCaregiver' seeks to improve the well-being of caregivers, which in turn can positively impact patient outcomes.
Looking ahead, Avani plans to collaborate with healthcare professionals and organizations to expand the app's features and reach. Her vision includes integrating telehealth services and creating a comprehensive platform that addresses the multifaceted needs of caregivers across India.
