In a stunning show of compassion and ingenuity, Bengaluru's 16-year-old Avani Radheshyam has created 'OncoCaregiver,' a mobile app that will assist cancer caregivers. Understanding the usually neglected plight of caregivers, Avani's project seeks to offer end-to-end support, especially targeting those in rural regions who might not have access to necessary resources.
Avani's motivation for 'OncoCaregiver' comes from her own life. Seeing her parents deal with the intricacies of taking care of her grandmother and aunt, both stage 2 cancer patients, she noticed the emotional and practical challenges caregivers face. "They were coping with complicated treatments, making tough choices, and offering constant care, all while attempting to be strong," Avani explained.
While many resources are available to cancer patients, Avani recognized that a large deficit lies in the specific resources for caregivers. Her application fills this need by providing:
Emotional Support: Counseling and peer support group access to ease stress and prevent burnout.
Medical Guidance: Easy-to-read information about treatment plans, medication regimens, and symptom relief.
Logistical Support: Features for appointment booking, transportation, and organizing day-to-day care routines.
