The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) was officially opened by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on a landmark day for the state of Nagaland, fulfilling a long-held goal for the Naga people. At the inauguration in Kohima, Mandaviya emphasized that the NIMSR is a research institute as well as a medical college. In addition to offering medical education, this school seeks to meet the Naga people's healthcare requirements.
The National Medical Commission granted permission to NIMSR, a Nagaland University affiliate, to accept 100 MBBS students beginning with the academic year 2023-2024.
As the state's first medical college to be established in the 60 years since its statehood, this permission represented a crucial turning point. 85 MBBS students from Nagaland and six from other states were enrolled in NIMSR in its first year, and they began their classes on September 1 following an introductory program.
Minister Mandaviya urged attendees, including students, to broaden their research interests beyond national borders and look into opportunities abroad. In order to provide pupils a competitive edge when applying for jobs abroad, he emphasized the Union government's initiative to introduce foreign language classes in various medical institutes around the nation.
Prominent figures, including Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare P Paiwang Konyak, and senior officials from both the Union and Nagaland governments were present for the opening ceremony. Other dignitaries and representatives from civil societies were also present.
For the people of Nagaland, the opening of the first medical college was a momentous occasion, and Chief Minister Rio was grateful to the Central Government for its unflinching support in making this project a reality.
