Dr. Abhijat Sheth, a prominent cardiothoracic surgeon, has taken over as the new Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC), following his appointment by the central government. His appointment comes at a crucial time, as the medical education regulator faces intense scrutiny following a CBI probe that exposed a major corruption racket involving senior officials. He succeeds Dr. B.N. Gangadhar, the former chairperson of NMC.

Why This Appointment Matters

Dr. Gangadhar had resigned in October 2024 owing to health issues, but continued in the role due to the lack of a suitable replacement. The Appointments Committee faced months of delay despite receiving several shortlists.

Now, in July 2025, Dr. Sheth has officially taken charge. He is currently serving as the President of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which oversees key medical entrance exams like NEET-PG.

This means Dr. Sheth will temporarily hold a dual regulatory role—heading both the NMC and NBEMS. He also serves as Director of Medical Services at Apollo Hospital, Ahmedabad.

His Journey as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Dr. Sheth has built an extensive career in adult cardiothoracic surgery, contributing to both clinical work and medical research across India and the UK.

He has delivered over 40 abstract and conference presentations at international forums such as the American Thoracic Society, British Thoracic Society, and European Respiratory Society. He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed research papers published in leading medical journals.

In addition to his clinical and academic achievements, he has been widely recognized for effectively guiding the NBEMS during his tenure.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Sheth said:

“It is a huge responsibility and it’s challenging. We need to focus on improving the quality, we need to focus on access, and good governance and teamwork. These are the primary things that we will focus on.”

Taking Charge Amid Scandal

Dr. Sheth’s appointment comes at a time when the NMC system is facing calls for reform. A CBI investigation into medical college inspections exposed alleged bribery and misconduct involving inspection leaks, fake faculty and patients, and illegal approvals granted to private colleges.

Raids were conducted across 40 colleges, and 35 individuals have been named in the FIR, raising serious concerns about the integrity of medical education regulation in India.

What’s Next

Dr. Sheth is expected to continue leading NBEMS until the NEET-PG exam is conducted in August. After that, he will fully transition into his role at the NMC, amid ongoing efforts to address regulatory lapses and strengthen oversight in medical education.
