Dr. Ejaz is very often seen consulting his patients in his hospital courtyard in a simple kurta and skull cap, instead of sitting inside a lavish cabin. The consultation fee is Rs 10 only. He tries to see all the patients that visit him the very same day instead of postponing the appointment the other day. He consults over a 100 patients in a single day.

According to earlier reporting, Dr. Ejaz began practising as a general surgeon in Patna in 1984 and has kept his consultation fee at Rs 10 since then. Some patients reportedly travel from outside Patna to consult him, making same-day consultations particularly helpful in reducing the need for additional trips.

How Much Does Dr. Ejaz Ali Charge for Consultations and Surgeries?

Dr. Ejaz was born in 1958 in a lower middle class family. He was the sixth of his 10 siblings. His father served as a block divisional officer during the British Raj. He completed his matriculation from a district school and went on to pursue a medical degree from Patna Medical College and Hospital in 1975, specialising in general surgery.

His low cost service approach extends beyond consultations. An appendix operation costs around Rs 17,000 in his hospital, including post-surgery medicines. He charges only Rs 11,000 for a gall-bladder stone removal surgery, including prescribed medicines.

According to the September 2026 Times of India report, he also reportedly waives some surgery charges and allows patients who cannot pay immediately to pay in instalments.

Dr. Ejaz’s late wife was also a doctor and charged Rs 10 for her services. He has passed down his approach and legacy to his children. All three of his children are doctors. His daughter, who is a gynecologist charges Rs. 50 for her services, whereas his son, who has earned his medical degree from an American institution charges Rs. 100.

Why Has Dr. Ejaz Ali Kept His Consultation Fee at Rs 10?

Dr. Ejaz belongs to a humble background himself and has seen poverty around him since an early age. According to earlier reporting by Prabhat Khabar, his mother, Shahzadi Begum, advised him never to charge more than Rs 10 for consultations. He also mentioned that he had received some advice from his mother too that incultates this compassion within him. In an interview with TOI, he said, “I saw poverty around me and there were certain instructions. I get satisfaction from such service to society.”

Dr Ejaz Ali's Political Career and Advocacy for Marginalized Communities

Dr. Ejaz is also a passionate advocate for social justice. He founded the All-India Backward Muslim Morcha in 1994.

The organization fought exclusively for Dalit Muslims and their reservation rights. The movement demanded Scheduled Caste status for these backward communities under Article 341 of the Constitution.

His political journey also saw him serving as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from Bihar, representing the Janata Dal (United) from 2008 to 2010. He joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal later in 2014, in the presence of Lalu Prasad Yadav, further amplifying his mission for social upliftment.
