China stopped making mercury thermometers on January 1, 2026, ending the run of a device invented nearly 300 years ago.
They were phased out because of mercury poisoning risk when they break, not because they were inaccurate.
India agreed to phase them out by 2020 but got an extension to 2025, and several states have already banned them in hospitals.
Digital thermometers are not perfectly accurate either. The trade-off is speed and safety, not precision.
If one breaks, how to handle the first few minutes matters more than how fast you clean it up.
On January 1, 2026, China stopped making mercury thermometers, closing a chapter that began in 1714 when Gabriel Fahrenheit first sealed mercury into glass. This instrument once sat in almost every home medicine cabinet and hospital ward. So why did it disappear, and what changed?
Fahrenheit's 1714 mercury-in-glass design made accurate, repeatable temperature readings possible for the first time.
In 1867, Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt shrank the bulky, foot-long thermometers of his day into a portable six-inch version, cutting the time needed for a reading from about twenty minutes to five1.
Soon after, routine temperature-taking became a standard part of diagnosing illness.
Mercury's steady, easy-to-read expansion made it the benchmark every later thermometer was compared against, and it held that position for well over a century.
Mercury became the preferred liquid for medical thermometers because it expands in a highly uniform and predictable manner with changes in temperature, allowing for accurate measurements. Unlike colored alcohol, mercury does not wet the inside of the glass tube, making the column easier to read and less likely to leave residue on the capillary walls. It also remains liquid over a wide temperature range relevant to medical use and responds quickly to changes in temperature. These properties made mercury the standard against which later clinical thermometers were compared for generations.¹ ⁴
When a mercury thermometer breaks, tiny beads of mercury can slowly release odorless mercury vapor into the surrounding air. A single thermometer contains only a small amount of mercury, but the metal gradually evaporates, especially in warm or poorly ventilated spaces. Repeated or prolonged inhalation of mercury vapor increases the risk of harmful health effects. ⁵
China's health regulator announced the ban back in 2020, giving manufacturers until January 1, 2026 to stop production, according to Global Times.
China had remained one of the world's largest manufacturers of mercury-containing thermometers long after many countries had shifted to mercury-free alternatives. The end of production therefore marks one of the final milestones in the global transition away from mercury-based medical devices. ⁶
The concern is not the thermometer's accuracy but the toxic mercury that may be released if the glass breaks.
A 2018 case report described a young man who developed fever, cough, and breathing trouble after a broken thermometer spilled mercury on his skin2.
According to the World Health Organization, replacing mercury-containing medical devices also helps reduce occupational exposure for healthcare workers and environmental contamination from mercury waste.⁷
China is not the first to act. Sweden banned mercury thermometers back in 1992, and Britain was debating a similar ban around the same time because of poisoning cases in children1.
The United States never passed one national ban, but state laws and safety guidelines have made mercury thermometers nearly impossible to buy for years.
Hospitals or clinics still holding old mercury thermometers, have to switch to mercury-free alternatives.
India signed onto the Minamata Convention, a global treaty to cut mercury use, in 2018.
The original deadline to stop making and trading mercury thermometers was 2020, but India asked for extension to 20253.
States including Punjab, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Delhi have already told hospitals to stop using mercury-based equipment and to dispose of any leftover stock as hazardous waste.
Following the 2025 phase-out deadline, healthcare facilities are expected to replace any remaining mercury thermometers with mercury-free alternatives wherever they are still in use. This aligns with India's commitments under the Minamata Convention to progressively eliminate mercury-added medical devices while ensuring safe disposal of existing equipment.³ ⁶
Mercury thermometers typically required three to ten minutes to obtain an accurate oral temperature reading.¹
Digital models cut that wait to under a minute. While placement matters, underarm readings, for instance, can be less reliable.
In routine clinical practice, the difference in accuracy between a properly used digital thermometer and a correctly used mercury thermometer is generally small. Studies have shown that differences between the two are often influenced more by measurement site, user technique, and device calibration than by the technology itself. Proper placement and following the manufacturer's instructions are therefore more important than whether the thermometer contains mercury or uses an electronic sensor.⁸ ⁹
In the end, mercury wasn't replaced because it was imprecise; it was phased out for safety.
Immediate handling of the spillage matters more than the speed of cleaning up:
Get people and pets out of the room and open windows to let air out.
Do not vacuum or sweep. Both spread mercury vapor or break it into smaller, harder-to-see pieces.
Avoid walking through the spill, since it can stick to shoes and spread further.
Use stiff paper or cardboard to gently gather the mercury beads into a sealed container. Then contact your local municipal health authority, pollution control authority, or hazardous waste disposal service for guidance on safe disposal instead of throwing it into household trash.¹⁰
If anyone develops chest pain, cough, fever, or trouble breathing in the days after, especially after a hot shower near the spill, seek medical care rather than waiting. These can be early signs of mercury vapor poisoning and are easy to mistake for a viral illness2.
Mercury thermometers were phased out not only because of the risk of accidental poisoning but also because of their long-term environmental impact. Once released into the environment, mercury can persist for decades and circulate between air, soil, and water. In aquatic environments, microorganisms can convert inorganic mercury into methylmercury, a highly toxic form that accumulates in fish and becomes more concentrated higher up the food chain.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury was adopted to reduce these environmental and public health risks by phasing out many mercury-added products, including medical thermometers, encouraging safer alternatives wherever feasible.³ ⁶
Chest pain, dry cough, or breathing trouble within a few days of a mercury exposure
Tremors or unusual neurological symptoms after exposure, especially in a child
Suspected swallowing or inhaling of a broken thermometer piece
Any mercury exposure in a pregnant woman or infant
The mercury thermometer did not fall because it stopped working well. For nearly three centuries, it did its job better than almost anything else. What changed was the risk it carried when it broke. China's 2026 ban and India's 2025 deadline are the latest steps in a shift that started with a handful of bans in the early 1990s. The real lesson is less about which thermometer reads a fever most precisely, and more about which one keeps a broken device from becoming a bigger problem.
Why were mercury thermometers banned?
Mercury thermometers were phased out because they can release toxic mercury if the glass breaks. Although they remain highly accurate, safer mercury-free alternatives such as digital thermometers are now widely available, reducing the risk of human exposure and environmental contamination.³ ⁶ ⁷
Can you still buy a mercury thermometer?
Availability depends on the country. Many nations have banned or severely restricted the manufacture and sale of mercury thermometers under national regulations or commitments made through the Minamata Convention. While some older devices may still exist, new mercury thermometers are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain legally.³ ⁶
Why is mercury dangerous?
Mercury primarily becomes hazardous when its vapor is inhaled. High or prolonged exposure can affect the lungs, kidneys, and nervous system. Mercury released into the environment can also be converted into methylmercury, which accumulates in fish and poses health risks to people and wildlife.⁵ ⁶
