A Pittsburg pediatric doctor was stabbed and killed and his wife critically injured after a man allegedly broke into their Edgewood home and attacked them while they were asleep, on Thursday.
Their two children, aged 8 and 12, escaped to a neighbor's house after their mother told them to.
Dr. Evans was a pediatric critical care doctor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and he was an Assistant Professor of critical care at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities.

The attack happened shortly after midnight at the family’s home in Edgewood. According to police, the couple woke up to a man wearing only underwear. The couple were asleep when a man entered the house through a rear window and attacked them with a kitchen knife. Evans and his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and fought bacon as they tried to protect themselves. Evan’s wife told police that the attacker made repeated utterances about "GOD” and being “GOD”.
His wife then shouted for their children, aged 8 and 12, to run to a neighbor's house, which they did safely. Evans was taken to the hospital but was later declared dead, while his wife remained in critical condition.
Police arrested 32- year old Elijah Hemingway in connection with the attack after a canine team found him hiding in a nearby backyard. He had cuts on his hands and was taken to a local hospital for treatment . Hemingway faces charges including homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass. Police have not disclosed a motive behind the attack yet.
Police described the crime scene and stated “It was a very violent scene. The bedroom furniture broken, mirrors broken. It was a very graphic scene.”
Police are still working to establish why the attack happened and if Hemingway knew Evans or his wife.
Evan’s wife told investigators that her husband called the attacker “Elijah” during the assault, suggesting he may have recognized him. Authorities have not identified a motive.
Investigators are also examining evidence recovered from the home, including a bloodstained kitchen knife, blood at several locations and signs of a struggle.
