Tamil Nadu Medical University Convocation Faces Scrutiny After Doctor Reports Missing Gold Medal for MS Surgery Topper

Omission at Chennai convocation raises questions about academic award verification processes

Author : Dr. Sumbul MBBS, MD

A recent convocation at the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in Chennai has drawn attention after a doctor reported that a university gold medal was not awarded as expected. The concern relates specifically to the Dr. C.M.K. Reddy gold medal for MS General Surgery, which was reportedly absent from the list of honors distributed during the ceremony.

The matter has highlighted the importance of accurate academic award management in medical universities, where distinctions are closely linked to merit and professional recognition.

Doctor Flags Missing Gold Medal at Chennai Medical Convocation

The issue was brought forward by a doctor, Dr. Sibichakkaravarthy, who studied MS General Surgery at Madras Medical College (MMC) associated with the super-specialty training pathway. According to the report, the candidate noticed that the medal, traditionally awarded to the top-performing MS General Surgery graduate, was missing from the official convocation awards.

As reported by The Hindu, Dr. Sibichakkaravarthy said,

Final year students of MS General Surgery from all colleges across the State take part in the exam. A theory exam followed by practical and case presentations are conducted and the best among the top three is selected. I emerged as the topper for 2024.

University gold medals are typically granted based on examination performance and are announced after result verification. Their omission can raise procedural questions, especially when eligible candidates are present.

When and Where the Convocation Issue Emerged

The discrepancy came to light following the recent convocation ceremony conducted in Chennai by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. During such events, postgraduate and super-specialty graduates usually receive degrees along with merit-based distinctions.

The absence of the specific medal category reportedly became apparent when the award list was reviewed after the ceremony.

I also followed up with the university for the last six months on the convocation date. But to my surprise, I received no communication regarding the convocation. I contacted the institute and they said the details were already sent to the university. I initially thought my name was missed but then when I checked the list of candidates getting medals, I found that Dr. C.M.K. Reddy Gold Medal for General Surgery had been given a miss this year.

Why University Gold Medals Matter in Medical Education

In Indian medical universities, gold medals are more than ceremonial honors. They serve as documented proof of academic excellence and may influence future academic opportunities, fellowships, and professional credibility.

Most university medals are instituted through endowments and are expected to be awarded annually if eligibility criteria are met. Any inconsistency in their distribution can prompt formal queries from candidates and faculty members.

How Such Administrative Gaps Can Occur

Convocation award lists typically undergo several layers of verification, including examination result confirmation, eligibility screening, and endowment compliance checks. However, administrative oversights may still occur due to documentation delays, funding-related conditions, or procedural lapses.

Once reported, universities generally review such matters through internal academic and administrative channels.

Institutional Response and Next Steps

The concern regarding the missing medal has reportedly been communicated to the relevant authorities. As per available information, detailed clarification from the university regarding the reason for the omission or any corrective action has not yet been clearly outlined in public reports.
