Key Points

  • Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine was abandoned after Christian Eriksen collapsed in the 65th minute in Odense.

  • The 34-year-old midfielder was conscious shortly after, briefly lost consciousness, and walked off the pitch before hospital evaluation.

  • Team doctor reported Eriksen’s implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) activated during the incident and functioned as intended.

  • Denmark were leading Ukraine 2-1 when the match was abandoned.

  • Latest updates indicate Eriksen is in good spirits and expected to be discharged from hospital soon.

Christian Eriksen, Denmark’s 34-year-old midfielder, collapsed in the 65th minute of a friendly match against Ukraine in Odense on Sunday, triggering an immediate stoppage and the abandonment of the game.

The Danish Football Association (DBU) confirmed that Eriksen regained consciousness shortly after the incident and was able to leave the pitch with assistance before being taken to hospital for further evaluation. The friendly served as part of Denmark's preparations ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The match was halted due to the medical emergency, with both teams and officials prioritizing player safety.

The incident comes nearly five years after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match of UEFA Euro 2020, a tournament that was played in 2021 following postponement during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).

What Happened During Denmark vs Ukraine Before Christian Eriksen's Collapse?

The incident occurred midway through the second half of Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine at Nature Energy Park in Odense, sending players, staff, and supporters into immediate concern.

The friendly was being played at Nature Energy Park in Odense. Television footage showed Eriksen clutching his chest before falling to the ground during the second half. Denmark and Ukraine players immediately formed a protective circle around him while medical staff rushed onto the field.

The referee later called off the match due to the severity of the situation.

Christian Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine has renewed attention on emergency cardiac response systems and athlete safety protocols in professional football.

Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who was on the pitch at the time, described the moment in an interview with TV2:

“There's a throw-in. I go out to the side and I turn around a bit, and I see Christian on his way to the floor. We know a little about how he reacts, what that means.”

He added that players reacted immediately and coordinated with medical staff as the emergency unfolded.

The Ukrainian Football Association later confirmed that the match was interrupted in the 64th minute, with Denmark leading 2-1. Denmark’s goals came from Conrad Harder Dalgas and Joakim Mæhle, while Viktor Tsygankov scored for Ukraine before the match was abandoned.

Christian Eriksen's ICD and His History of Cardiac Arrest

Christian Eriksen has a known cardiac history after suffering a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 in 2021, which led to the implantation of an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD).

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen told TV 2 Sport that the device appeared to activate during the incident. He said Eriksen clutched his chest before collapsing and briefly lost consciousness.

“Eriksen's ICD activated while he was playing. I saw him clutch his chest and scream before collapsing. We're analyzing the pacemaker because it could determine the underlying cause. He regained consciousness fairly quickly. The pacemaker fulfilled its function: to restore his consciousness.”

According to Boesen, Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness rapidly, allowing doctors to communicate with him almost immediately after treatment began. Eriksen later asked the doctor to reassure teammates that he was okay.

Boesen added that Eriksen regained consciousness quickly and was able to leave the pitch before being taken for hospital evaluation to determine the cause of the episode.

The ICD is designed to correct dangerous heart rhythm disturbances and prevent sudden cardiac events.

ICDs continuously monitor heart rhythm and can deliver electrical therapy when potentially life-threatening arrhythmias are detected.

Medical assessment is ongoing to understand whether the activation was triggered by rhythm irregularity or exertion-related strain.

Christian Eriksen Stable After On-Field Emergency, DBU Says

The Danish Football Association (DBU) said Christian Eriksen was “doing well under the circumstances” following initial medical assessment after his collapse during the friendly against Ukraine in Odense.

Eriksen was examined on the pitch before being taken for hospital evaluation, with medical teams continuing to coordinate with doctors to monitor his condition and determine the cause of the incident.

Players from Denmark and Ukraine, along with coaching staff, immediately assisted medical personnel and formed a protective circle around Eriksen during treatment.

Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg described the moment as a shock, adding that players reacted within seconds and responded in coordination with medical staff once the severity of the situation became clear.

Denmark head coach Brian Riemer later praised both teams and match personnel for their composure and compassion during the emergency. Following the abandonment, players and coaching staff from both nations reportedly stood arm in arm on the pitch as the stadium applauded.

Riemer indicated that neither players nor coaching staff were in a position to continue after witnessing the medical emergency, leading officials to abandon the fixture.

Why Christian Eriksen's Collapse Has Renewed Focus on Athlete Cardiac Safety

Christian Eriksen resumed professional football after his 2021 cardiac arrest and ICD implantation and remains one of the most high-profile cases in modern sport involving return to play after major cardiac events.

He later returned to top-level football with Brentford before continuing his club career and remaining a key figure for Denmark.

Eriksen’s collapse has renewed attention on cardiac safety protocols in elite football, particularly for players returning after serious heart conditions and implanted devices.

In a further update released on Monday, Denmark team physician Morten Boesen said Eriksen was in good spirits, resting with his family, and expected to be discharged from hospital soon after completing medical examinations.
