Renowned psychiatrist and social activist Dr. P.V. Bhandary has been chosen for the Sangolli Rayanna Award 2025, a recognition that honours contributions in service of society and culture.
The award is being presented by the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Abhimani Balaga, Udupi district, in collaboration with the Kannada Sahitya Parishath, Udupi taluk. The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the Yakshagana Kalaranga Hall, IYC, Udupi. The announcement was made at a press conference addressed by Siddabasayya Swami Chikkamath, president of the Balaga.
The Sangolli Rayanna Award was instituted by the Government of Karnataka in 2013 to commemorate the legacy of freedom fighters. According to the state government, it is conferred on those “who have sacrificed their whole and soul for the protection and upliftment of their land, water, language and culture.”
One of the most prestigious honours in Karnataka, the award carries a plaque, shawl, garland, and a cash reward of ₹5 lakh. Over the years, it has come to symbolise courage, commitment, and dedication to public welfare.
Dr. P. V. Bhandary has been serving as a consultant psychiatrist and director at A. V. Baliga Memorial Hospital, Udupi, for over 15 years. Through his clinical practice and outreach, he has helped thousands of individuals and families live healthier, more balanced, and harmonious lives.
Beyond his hospital duties, Dr. Bhandary is known for his public lectures, awareness campaigns, and social initiatives that promote mental health literacy and reduce stigma around psychiatric conditions. His sustained efforts have not only benefitted patients but also strengthened community resilience and social stability in the Udupi region and beyond.
Dr. P.V. Bhandary pursued his MBBS at JJM Medical College, Davanagere. He went on to complete a Diploma in Psychological Medicine at Manipal University, followed by a DNB in Psychiatry from Fr. Muller Medical College, Mangaluru. His academic journey reflects a strong commitment to specialised training and advancing psychiatric care in Karnataka.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Bhandary has received numerous accolades that highlight both his medical expertise and social service. Among them are the Best Psychiatrist Award, Kannada Sahitya Parishath Award, District Kannada Rajyotsava Award, Dr. S. S. Jayaram Award, Spandana Award, and the Sanyam Award conferred by the Government of Karnataka.
