That does not mean every glass carries the same story. Water changes by source and treatment method. It also changes by pipe age and local geology. A home on a private well faces a different task from an apartment served by a city utility. The smartest first step is local knowledge. The EPA says community water systems must provide annual Consumer Confidence Reports with information about local drinking water quality.

Where Filters Fit In

Water filters enter the picture after you know what you want to reduce. A pitcher may help with taste. An under-sink system may target specific contaminants. A countertop unit may suit renters or travelers who need a portable option. The key point is simple: start with the water report or a certified test. Then match the filter to the substance you want addressed.

Nitrate Deserves More Attention

What to Do at Home

Start with the annual Consumer Confidence Report if you use a public system. Search by utility name and “CCR” if the report did not arrive in the mail. Look for lead, nitrate, arsenic, PFAS and disinfection byproducts. If a number appears close to a legal limit, call the utility and ask what the trend shows.

Private well owners need a more active plan. Test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year. Add arsenic or PFAS testing when local conditions suggest risk. Keep records so changes become easier to spot. Water can look fine and still carry a problem. The answer starts with evidence, then a filter or repair plan that fits the result.
