The earliest institution in the state, Tamil Nadu Government Dental College & Hospital, Chennai, was established in 1952–53, marking the beginning of formal dental education in the region. Despite their historical importance, the limited number of government colleges results in fewer publicly funded seats, increasing dependence on private institutions for dental education.

According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the college has frequently secured the first position between 2024 - 2022 in dental rankings and was ranked second in 2025, maintaining a consistent top-two presence over the years.

It was ranked among the top institutions globally in dentistry, securing a position around 25th–26th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject in Dentistry just below New York University, reflecting its academic and research performance.
