Dr. Sreelekshmi P: To start, can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in periodontics?

Dr. Meenu G: Sure! I completed my BDS from Amrita School of Dentistry in Kochi, Kerala, and then went on to pursue my MDS from Pushpagiri College of Dental Sciences in Thiruvalla, Kerala. After completing my studies, I started working at a dental clinic in Kochi. My interest in periodontics developed early on during my training, as I found it fascinating how much impact gum health has on overall dental health. Periodontics not only helps preserve teeth but also plays a huge role in improving esthetics, which really appealed to me.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What do you find most exciting about pursuing periodontics?

Dr. Meenu G: One of the most exciting parts is the range of opportunities within the field. There are so many different types of surgeries we can perform. If you have a strong desire to learn, there’s always something fresh to explore and master. Plus, we’re always advancing in both surgery and technology, which makes it an interesting and rewarding field to work in. The constant innovations keep me engaged and motivated, and the ability to help patients regain not just their oral health but also their confidence is incredibly fulfilling.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What makes periodontics such an essential part of dental care?

Dr. Meenu G: Periodontics is crucial for maintaining the overall health of your smile. It’s about preserving natural teeth, improving gum health, preventing diseases, and enhancing esthetics. It’s foundational because it helps us assess the condition of teeth and gums—allowing us to save teeth and replace them, when necessary, with the latest advancements.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How has periodontics evolved over the years?

Dr. Meenu G: In the past, periodontics focused mainly on conventional methods for treating gum disease. But today, there’s been a huge shift. We now have advancements in regeneration, esthetics, and particularly mucogingival surgeries, which focus on improving the appearance and health of the gums. The field has really evolved with new technologies that make treatment less invasive and more effective.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What advice would you give to patients to maintain good gum health?

Dr. Meenu G: Prevention is key! Brush twice a day with proper technique, floss daily, and use an antibacterial mouthwash if recommended. I also encourage patients to visit their dentist regularly—at least once every six months. Many gum issues, like gingivitis, start silently and can only be detected during routine checkups. Catching problems early can save a lot of trouble later.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What role do periodontists play in implant surgeries?

Dr. Meenu G: Periodontists are experts in soft tissue management, and this makes us especially skilled in placing implants. We’re able to place implants more precisely because we have a deep understanding of the surrounding structures, like the gums and bone. While maxillofacial surgeons are also trained in implant surgery, periodontists play a key role in ensuring the surrounding tissues are in optimal condition for successful implant placement.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How do you manage patient anxiety, especially for surgical procedures?

Dr. Meenu G: This is a challenge, but it’s manageable with the right approach. I take time to explain procedures step-by-step and reassure patients about what to expect. For surgical cases, I emphasize the benefits of the procedure and how it will improve their oral health. Sometimes, simple gestures like listening to their concerns or offering a comforting environment can work wonders in easing their anxiety.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How important is communication with patients in your day-to-day work?

Dr. Meenu G: Communication is everything in periodontics! I always make sure to explain things clearly, especially because a lot of what we do can be intimidating for patients. Whether it’s a procedure or just a consultation, I take the time to answer their questions and address their concerns. It’s also about listening to them—I want to know how they’re feeling, what their goals are, and what’s bothering them. When patients feel heard and understood, it makes a huge difference in their comfort level and the success of the treatment.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How do you stay competitive in today’s saturated dental field?

Dr. Meenu G: It’s becoming more challenging to find work, especially with the increasing number of postgraduate periodontists graduating each year. To stay competitive, it’s crucial to stay updated on new techniques, offer excellent patient care, and embrace technology. A strong online presence and positive patient relationships are also key. Specializing helps too, as it allows you to develop deep expertise, unique capabilities, and knowledge that really sets you apart.

Staying updated is vital in a field like periodontics, where technology and techniques are constantly evolving. I make it a point to participate in conferences, workshops, and webinars to gain insights from industry experts. Additionally, I read research papers and journals to keep track of the latest studies and evidence-based practices. Another key aspect is collaborating with colleagues and sharing knowledge; discussions and case reviews often help me stay sharp. I also find social media and online dental communities helpful, as they provide immediate access to new trends, tools, and technologies. Staying engaged with these resources allows me to offer the most current and effective treatments to my patients.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How important is technology in staying competitive in the dental field?

Dr. Meenu G: Technology is essential. It improves the treatment process for both patients and dentists. Using advanced technologies not only enhances the effectiveness of procedures but also makes the experience smoother and more efficient. Embracing these tools can give you a significant advantage over competitors who might not be using the latest advancements.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: How can a dental practice stand out in today’s competitive environment?

Dr. Meenu G: Specializing is key to setting yourself apart. When you specialize, you develop expertise and unique capabilities that make your practice stand out. Providing personalized experiences, fostering strong patient relationships, and staying updated on the latest techniques and technologies is essential. It’s about offering something extra that makes patients choose you over others.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What advice would you give to young dentists interested in periodontics?

Dr. Meenu G: Follow your passion, but be prepared to work hard. Periodontics requires precision, patience, and a commitment to continuous learning. Seek out mentors, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to start small. The field is incredibly rewarding if you approach it with dedication and a genuine interest in helping people.

Dr. Sreelekshmi P: What do you hope to achieve in your career moving forward?

Dr. Meenu G: I hope to continue improving patients’ lives through my work. I’m also keen on contributing to the field through research and sharing my experiences with aspiring dentists. Periodontics is such a dynamic field, and I want to play a part in shaping its future—whether that’s by adopting new techniques, mentoring others, or simply continuing to do my best for my patients.
