Dr. Vivek Loomba faces four 2017 charges of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct with force or coercion in Michigan.
West Bloomfield police say four women have come forward with similar allegations against Dr. Loomba.
Dr. Loomba appears to be practicing pain management in Delhi while active US warrants remain in place.
Dr. Vivek Loomba, a former Henry Ford Health physician facing criminal sexual conduct charges in Michigan, appears to be seeing patients at a pain-management practice in New Delhi nearly nine years after leaving the US during the investigation. West Bloomfield police say the criminal case remains open, with active warrants for his arrest.
Dr. Vivek Loomba, a former Henry Ford Health physician, was charged in 2017 with four counts of fourth-degree Criminal Sexual Conduct with force or coercion, described in the report as a two-year misdemeanor. West Bloomfield police said Loomba quit his job and left the US while the allegations were under investigation.
Investigators told ClickOnDetroit they believe Loomba failed to board a flight back to the US on November 7, 2017, and did not return. The case later led to three civil lawsuits filed on behalf of patients. Andrew J. Laurila, an associate attorney with Giroux Pappas Law who represented three women in those cases, said the lawsuits were dismissed without prejudice because Loomba could not be served after leaving the country.
“Multiple women credibly accused him of sexually assaulting them during medical appointments in 2017, and his response was to quit his job, flee the country, and never return.” Laurila told ClickOnDetroit.
West Bloomfield Police told ClickOnDetroit that four women have come forward with similar allegations against Loomba. The outlet also identified Lori McKee of Waterford, who previously alleged that Loomba sexually assaulted her during a visit to Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield.
McKee told ClickOnDetroit that Loomba began touching her when a nurse practitioner was not in the room. “He takes his hand, and he totally cups my breast and… moves it,” she said. In a 2019 interview, McKee also said, “I’m embarrassed about this whole situation because I’m a nurse. I’m supposed to recognize what’s right and what’s wrong, but I trusted him.”
A separate 2017 police report obtained by ClickOnDetroit details another woman's account during an appointment at Henry Ford Hospital for neck and back pain injections. According to the report, she alleged that Loomba closed the curtain and touched her neck and shoulders under her gown before placing both hands on her breasts.
The woman told police the contact continued for about two minutes. The report says Loomba later told her, “You should get my massages instead of these injections.”
A registered nurse told police Loomba had previously asked her to pull the curtain while he was alone with a patient, saying it had happened “a few times.” Another nurse said the patient later asked whether the contact was normal. The nurse told her it was “not normal” and reported the complaint to a supervisor.
ClickOnDetroit found a website, social media activity and advertisements indicating that Dr. Vivek Loomba appears to be associated with a pain-management practice in Delhi. When the outlet contacted the practice, a person who answered said Loomba was unavailable but that an appointment could be scheduled for the following week.
Loomba’s website describes him as an anesthesiologist in Delhi with “23+ years of experience” in pain and palliative care. It lists him as a pain-management consultant at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
The website lists medications, nerve blocks, epidural procedures, radiofrequency ablation, physiotherapy and behavioral therapy among the treatments associated with his practice.
West Bloomfield police told ClickOnDetroit that the FBI and Homeland Security have been involved in the case but said investigators have not received cooperation from law enforcement in India. Police attributed the continued impasse partly to the misdemeanor classification of the charges and the lack of cooperation.
The warrants remain active, according to police. Investigators also said there is a “permanent flag through Homeland Security,” meaning authorities would be notified if Loomba books a flight.
The investigation remains ongoing. The allegations and criminal charges against Loomba have not resulted in a conviction.
