Dr. Suneela Garg has been conferred the title of Professor Emeritus in recognition of her long-standing contributions to medical education, research, and public health.
Dr. Garg has served for nearly four decades in the field of Community Medicine. She has been the Director Professor and Head of the Department of Community Medicine at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), New Delhi, and also held the position of Sub-Dean at MAMC and its associated hospitals. She has played a key role in academic leadership and in strengthening medical education under Delhi University.
She obtained her MBBS and MD in Community Medicine from Nagpur University between 1974 and 1982. Over her career, she has guided numerous postgraduate and doctoral students and has worked extensively in research, teaching, and policy formulation. Dr. Suneela Garg is also an alumnus of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sevagram, Maharashtra.
Dr. Suneela Garg is currently the Chair of the Programme Advisory Committee at the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW), where she provides strategic guidance on healthcare policies and programs. She also serves as an advisor to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and as a task force member of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
Her thrust areas include Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCHA), HIV/AIDS, and prevention and control of deafness. She has been a regional trainer for Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) and maternal near miss reviews. She has contributed to the formulation of guidelines for safe motherhood, adolescent and child health, and has been involved in the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD).
Internationally, Dr. Suneela Garg has been associated with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a member of expert committees and has worked with the Lancet Commission on Hearing Loss and the Lancet Commission COVID-19 India Task Force.
She has been ranked among the top 2 percent of scientists globally in the Elsevier database (2022). Garg has also published more than 225 research papers and manuals, including resources for WHO and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
Her contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the State Award for Meritorious Services, the State AIDS Award, the KN Rao Memorial Oration of the Indian Public Health Association (2018), the Harcharan Oration of IAPSM (2019), and the Al Saha Memorial Oration of IPHA (2022).
Dr. Suneela Garg has also held leadership positions as National President of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) in 2021–22 and National President of the Organised Medicine Academic Guild (OMAG) in 2021–22.
She continues to contribute to public health as Principal Investigator of several national and international projects, resource faculty for leadership and management programs, and coordinator of initiatives such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health (IGNOU) and the HIV Medicine Regional Training Centre at MAMC.
The conferment of Professor Emeritus adds to her distinguished record of service in public health, medical education, and research.
