Akola, Maharashtra – A five-year-old girl is receiving intensive medical care after being allegedly sexually assaulted by her stepfather in Akola district, Maharashtra on 28th September. Police confirmed the man has been arrested and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with relevant sections of the law.
According to reports, the incident occurred late on Sunday evening when the child’s mother was away from home attending a Garba event during Navaratri. The accused allegedly assaulted the girl at their residence where she was left with her brother. When the mother returned, the child in excruciating pain narrated the cruelty, after which she was brought to a local hospital. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she is undergoing treatment.
While specific details of her injuries have not been publicly disclosed to protect the minor’s identity, sexual assault in children can cause severe physical trauma, including internal injuries, infections, and long-term reproductive health complications.
Emergency care typically involves stabilizing the child, preventing and treating infections, and providing psychological support. The National Health Mission guidelines highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing pediatric sexual assault survivors, combining medical, psychological, and legal support.
Police officials have confirmed that the accused stepfather has been taken into custody and will face trial. The POCSO Act mandates strict punishment for sexual crimes against minors and requires expedited trial processes in such cases. Authorities have also stated that counseling support will be provided to the survivor as part of post-trauma care.
Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows a consistent rise in reported crimes against children under the POCSO Act. In 2022 alone, over 1.62 lakh crimes against children were reported, with sexual assault cases forming a significant proportion. Experts believe that while increased reporting reflects better awareness, it also underscores the urgent need for preventive measures and stronger enforcement.
Health professionals note that immediate medical attention in cases of sexual assault among children is crucial not only for physical recovery but also for reducing the risk of long-term psychological harm.
