AIIMS Nagpur has received full accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), becoming the first public hospital in Maharashtra to secure this status. The accreditation was granted on 15 February 2026 following a comprehensive external assessment process.

NABH operates under the Quality Council of India and sets national standards for quality and patient safety in healthcare institutions.

What Is NABH Accreditation and Why It Matters for Patient Safety

Full NABH accreditation confirms that a hospital complies with defined standards related to patient safety, infection control, medication management, clinical governance, infrastructure, and documentation practices. The evaluation process includes detailed document review, on-site inspections, and interaction with hospital teams to assess real-time implementation of protocols.

Accreditation is voluntary but recognized nationally as a benchmark for structured quality systems in healthcare delivery.

AIIMS Nagpur: First Public Hospital in Maharashtra to Achieve Complete NABH Status

AIIMS Nagpur is the first public hospital in Maharashtra to receive complete NABH accreditation.

The accreditation was awarded in February 2026 at AIIMS Nagpur’s campus in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The institute is located in the MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) area and functions as a tertiary care referral center for central India.

Executive Director and CEO Dr. Prashant P. Joshi congratulated the institute and stated that the accreditation recognizes the coordinated efforts of faculty members, resident doctors, nursing staff, and administrative personnel in building structured quality systems and maintaining safe, patient-focused care.1

He added that this milestone reinforces the institute’s position as a public tertiary-care centre dedicated to maintaining high standards in healthcare services.1

AIIMS Nagpur was established in 2018 under the Phase-IV expansion of AIIMS institutions and began clinical services in 2019.

Why This Development Is Significant for Public Healthcare

According to official sources, AIIMS Nagpur is the first public hospital in Maharashtra to receive complete NABH accreditation. Public hospitals often manage high patient volumes while functioning within government systems. Meeting full NABH standards indicates compliance with nationally defined benchmarks for quality assurance and patient safety.

Since the start of its clinical services, the institute has treated over 25 lakh outpatients and more than 1 lakh inpatients and has performed over 42,000 surgeries, including major and super-major procedures. These figures reflect the scale of services delivered alongside adherence to accreditation requirements.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Nilesh Nadgeve said that the accreditation strengthens the institute’s commitment to patient safety, quality healthcare delivery, and ongoing quality enhancement measures.1

The accreditation exercise was overseen by Dr. Nitin Marathe, Joint Medical Superintendent, with coordinated involvement from various departments and hospital committees throughout the process.1

How the NABH Assessment Process Works in India

The NABH full accreditation process involved structured evaluation across multiple domains, including patient care pathways, infection prevention protocols, medication safety systems, operation theatre practices, documentation standards, and grievance redressal mechanisms.

Hospital leadership coordinated internal audits and quality reviews before the final external assessment. NABH assessors verified not only documented policies but also their implementation across departments.
