New Delhi, October 28, 2025 – In a chilling case blending betrayal, forensic insights, and media influence, Delhi Police have arrested a 21-year-old BSc Forensic Science student for allegedly did the murder of her 32-year-old live-in partner, a UPSC aspirant, in the Timarpur area. The accused, Amrita Chauhan used her academic knowledge and fascination with crime web series to stage the killing as a gas cylinder explosion along with her two accomplices, delaying detection for nearly two weeks.
On the intervening night of October 6, 2025, a fire broke out in a fourth-floor flat at E-60, Gandhi Vihar, Timarpur, North Delhi. Emergency responders from Timarpur Police Station and fire services rushed to the scene, extinguishing the blaze and discovering a deeply charred male body. Initially registered as an accidental fire under sections 287/106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the case took a sinister turn after the victim's family raised suspicions.
The deceased was identified as Ram Kesh Meena, a 32-year-old UPSC aspirant residing in the flat. Forensic teams noted inconsistencies in the burn patterns and explosion site, prompting a deeper probe led by Inspector Pankaj Tomar under SHO Praveen Kumar at Timarpur Police Station.
CCTV footage from the building proved pivotal. It captured two masked individuals entering around 2:20 a.m. on night of October 6, one exiting after 39 minutes, and at approximately 2:57 a.m., a woman which was later identified to be Amrita Chauhan, leaving with another person just before the fire erupted. Call Detail Records (CDR) further corroborated suspicions, placing Chauhan's mobile near E-Block, Gandhi Vihar, at the time of the incident, said DCP Banthia.
After multiple raids in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Chauhan was arrested on October 18. During interrogation, she confessed, implicating her ex-boyfriend and another associate. The police traced the trio's movements, confirming they had traveled from Moradabad to Delhi that night.
Chauhan and Meena had been in a live-in relationship since May 2025. The motive stemmed from personal betrayal: Meena had secretly recorded obscene videos and images of Chauhan, storing them on a hard disk. Despite her repeated demands, he refused to delete them, fabricating excuses and humiliating her, according to police statements.
Enraged and feeling trapped, Chauhan confided in her ex-boyfriend, Sumit Kashyap (27), an LPG gas cylinder distributor. Kashyap, fueled by anger, enlisted mutual friend Sandeep Kumar (29), an SSC/CGL aspirant, to plot revenge. All three hail from Moradabad.
Notably, Chauhan had been disowned by her family in 2024, as per India Today, adding layers to her isolation, though police have not directly linked this to the crime.
The trio allegedly entered Meena's flat on the night of October 6. They strangled him, possibly using a phone charger, per some reports and beat him to death. To obliterate evidence and simulate an accident, Chauhan poured ghee, oil, and wine over the body for rapid incineration. Kashyap then manipulated the LPG cylinder: removing it from the kitchen, placing it near Meena's head, opening the regulator knob, and igniting the fire with a lighter.
They removed the iron gate's netting, locked it from inside to mimic a trapped victim, and fled with the hard disk, two laptops, a trolley bag, and other belongings. About an hour later, the cylinder exploded, charring the body beyond recognition.
Chauhan's forensic training and obsession with crime web series were key in attempting this crime:
She meticulously planned the scene to mislead investigators, destroying digital traces and fabricating an "accidental" narrative.
Kashyap was apprehended on October 21 in Moradabad, with his mobile phone which was probably used in the crime, the mobile phone was seized. Kumar arrested on October 23. Key recoveries include the hard disk with the videos, Meena's shirt, the trolley bag, laptops, and the accused's phones.
The case is registered under BNS sections for murder and evidence destruction. Forensic analysis of burn patterns, viscera, and digital devices continues to confirm the sequence. As of October 28, investigations proceed, with the accused in custody.
