A late night incident at PBM Hospital, the largest government medical facility in Bikaner, has triggered outrage after a young patient alleged that he was assaulted by doctors while seeking urgent medical attention for severe chest pain. The incident, which occurred around 10 pm on December 29, was captured on video and has since gone viral, prompting hospital authorities to initiate an internal inquiry.
This incident comes shortly after a widely-reported incident at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, where a viral video showed a senior resident doctor from the Pulmonary Medicine department physically striking a patient during a dispute in the ward.
According to the complaint, 25 year old Gopal, a resident of Derajsar village in Bikaner, arrived at PBM Hospital with his mother, Vicky Devi, aged 40. Gopal was reportedly suffering from intense chest pain and required immediate examination. At the time, the trauma center was crowded, with several patients waiting for treatment.
According to Bhaskar English Vicky Devi alleged that while requesting urgent attention for her son, she lightly touched the doctor’s hand and said, “Please see my son quickly, he is in severe pain.” She claimed the gesture angered the doctor, who began scolding her for touching him.
The woman stated that the doctor’s reaction distressed her son, leading to a heated exchange. Gopal, in his statement, maintained that he did not assault or threaten anyone and only objected to what he described as disrespectful behavior towards his mother. He alleged that despite his critical condition, the doctor and others present grabbed him, beat him, and slapped him repeatedly.
Video footage from the scene shows the young man writhing in pain, clutching his chest, while his mother pleads with folded hands and attempts to intervene. Eyewitnesses present at the trauma Centre corroborated that the argument began after the doctor objected to being touched during the request for urgent care. They confirmed that the patient was allegedly beaten during the confrontation.
According to those present, hospital security was alerted following the scuffle. The doctor reportedly returned briefly to the area and was heard angrily stating that he had warned against being touched and questioned how the patient dared to hold his hand. After another verbal exchange, the doctor allegedly left the trauma center without examining or treating Gopal.
Throughout the incident, the patient continued to show visible signs of distress, repeatedly clutching his chest, while his mother begged for medical help.
Reacting to the incident, PBM Hospital Superintendent Dr. B.C. Gheeyah confirmed that a video of the alleged assault had surfaced. He said the hospital administration was reviewing the footage and collecting information related to the case.
“Information regarding the case is being gathered. Action will be taken as per rules,” Dr. Gheeyah stated, assuring that the matter would be examined in accordance with hospital protocols.
