Orthopedic consultant Dr. Yogendra Jaiswal was allegedly abused and assaulted by a patient’s son at Bhanujyot Hospital in Kalyan.
The Kolsewadi police registered a case under Sections 118(1), 115(2), 352 and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The incident has renewed doctors’ demands for stronger hospital security.
Orthopedic consultant Dr. Yogendra Jaiswal was allegedly assaulted inside the OPD of a Bhanujyot Hospital in Kalyan, Thane, Maharashtra, by the son of a patient. The patient, Jaywant Deshmukh, had a rib fracture, and Dr. Jaiswal was examining him and explaining the required bandaging and medication. On saturday, the doctor examined a patient with a rib fracture.
The incident went viral on social media, showed the doctor explaining patient's treatment and addressing his son's queries when the conversation allegedly turned into a verbal dispute. After leaving the chamber, the patient's son reportedly returned within minutes and allegedly thrashed the doctor.
According to NDTV, Dr. Jaiswal was examining patient Jaywant Deshmukh and explaining treatment instructions, including medication use and bandage application, when the patient’s son repeatedly raised questions. Jaiswal said he asked the man to address him respectfully.
The doctor told reporters that the man responded, “Who do you think you are - some big-shot doctor?”
He allegedly then left the chamber, continued abusing Dr. Jaiswal and returned to attack him. The incident was also captured on CCTV.
Based on Dr. Jaiswal’s complaint, Kolsewadi police registered a case under Sections 118(1), 115(2), 352 and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to the Indian Express report.
The case came weeks after the July 6 incident at KDMC’s Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli, where Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and his associates allegedly assaulted three doctors and two nurses.
Dr. Jatin Harbada, owner of Bhanujyot Hospital and a consultant physician, said Dr. Jaiswal had patiently explained the treatment before the relative became aggressive.
Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Atharva Shinde, president of Central MARD, called for stronger hospital security and better enforcement of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions Act, 2010. Dr. Chattopadhyay of the All India Doctors also sought strict legal action and a safer workplace for healthcare professionals.
“We doctors spend years studying and working hard to save patients' lives, yet instead of appreciation, we are getting beaten up. This is absolutely wrong,” said Dr. Jaiswal, as reported in NDTV.
The incident has added to concerns over violence against doctors and other healthcare workers in Maharashtra.
