Hazaribagh, Jharkhand - A pregnant woman died after falling from a table in the operation theatre (OT) at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College & Hospital (SBMCH) in Hazaribagh, sparking allegations of medical negligence.
The woman identified as Chandni Kumari was admitted to SBMCH with labour pain on 1st November night. After she was moved to the OT, she reportedly fell from the OT bed to the floor, suffering serious injuries while getting ready for the surgery. The hospital authorities report that she slipped, after she stepped on to the footboard while coming down from the OT table. Her family alleges that no doctor was present in the OT when the incident occurred, and the delivery was going to be handled only by nurses. She was then transferred to a private hospital, where she and her unborn child were declared dead.
According to hospital officials, the fall occurred because the woman's attendants failed to support her properly while she was on the bed. The civil surgeon, Dr Ashok Kumar, stated that the patient fell and was then taken by her family to a private facility forcibly against the doctor's advice. She was then referred to Ranchi from the private hospital and died on the way. Meanwhile, the family claims that the fall resulted from inadequate supervision and lack of medical staff in the OT.
Following the incident, the hospital premises were reportedly vandalized by the relatives of the deceased, who demanded compensation, refused to allow a post-mortem examination, and took the body away from the facility.
The hospital authorities have announced formation of a committee to investigate the incident. Local health officials state that findings will be submitted to the deputy commissioner.
This incident at SBMCH has occurred amid a growing number of medical-negligence claims in the region. After the case, several families at the hospital have come forward alleging substandard care in maternal and emergency services. The hospital management has reportedly initiated an internal investigation.
Falls and accidents in obstetric care settings are rare but critical. Beds and OT tables should have safety features and attendants must monitor labor phases. The presence of qualified obstetricians and proper emergency protocols are essential to prevent avoidable maternal and fetal deaths.
