The Tamil Nadu government has approved 36 non-teaching hospitals across the state to conduct the Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), a move that is expected to create 1,504 internship seats annually. The initiative aims to expand internship capacity for FMGs who must complete CRMI to obtain permanent registration to practice medicine in India.
The policy has already entered the implementation phase. According to The Times of India, 370 FMGs from the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) waiting list have been allotted internship positions across designated hospitals. The state has also launched an online portal to streamline future internship allotments.

CRMI is a mandatory requirement for Foreign Medical Graduates who have qualified the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and are seeking permanent registration to practise medicine in India.
The expanded network increases the state's internship capacity by allowing eligible FMGs to complete their mandatory clinical training in designated non-teaching hospitals.
Tamil Nadu has allotted internship positions to 370 FMGs who had been on the waiting list maintained by the Directorate of Medical Education headquarters in Chennai.
The interns had completed their medical education abroad and qualified the FMGE before becoming eligible for CRMI.
The report states that 23 interns were posted to government teaching hospitals and 13 to district headquarters hospitals, while the remaining candidates were distributed among the newly designated non-teaching institutions.
Several hospitals have been allotted up to 40 interns each, including MIOT Hospital in Chennai, Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai, Railway Hospital in Chennai, and Sri Rama Krishna Hospital in Sullapattu. Other participating institutions include K G Hospital in Coimbatore, Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, and Railway Hospitals in Tiruchirappalli and Madurai.
The state has also introduced an online portal to facilitate future FMG internship allotments.
The portal is intended to manage internship applications and allotments digitally, providing a centralised system for future placements.
The approval of additional non-teaching hospitals increases the number of internship positions available to FMGs in Tamil Nadu, where internship availability has been a key requirement for graduates seeking to complete CRMI after clearing the FMGE.
With the expansion of approved hospitals and the introduction of an online allotment system, the state has taken steps to increase internship capacity and streamline the placement process for eligible Foreign Medical Graduates.
