The best of my profession is the ceaseless amount of research in healthcare which goes on endlessly. I was always interested in learning the basics of making medicines as I was curious as a child when I used to read content label on every product. Also, some personal incidents evoked my interest in Cancer Research in which I am involved since my Bachelor's degree.

Are you happy/satisfied with the current scenario of pharmacy education in India?

As far as Pharmacy education is concerned, I have seen there is drastic improvement in Pharmacy education when it comes to private universities and colleges due to their infrastructure facilities and teaching staff as well. However, I have been to some government University and college where the infrastructure facilities were redundant but the teaching faculty were well-versed and experienced.

What can be done to improve education and the profession in this sector?

I believe government colleges as well as old Universities/colleges should also be improved in terms of infrastructure such as labs and latest instruments and equipments.

What are some fun facts about pharmacy that you want the readers to know?

First of all, especially in India, the shops which sell medicines are known as "Pharmacies" and not 'Chemists and druggists.' Pharmacy involves learning about the basic of making API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) from designing the drug through softwares till cell-culture, animal research and human trials. Pharmacologists are those professionals who convert the animal dose to human dose.

What do you think about current industry / job scenario?

Currently, Pharmacy is indeed a growing sector however the industries are saturated at certain places only. For instance, in India, the major Pharma giants are located in densely populated locations such a Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Telangana, Ahmedabad, Delhi and some in Mumbai and Pune. There are other places such as Himachal Pradesh and Goa where Pharma sector is growing however it is a slow growth. Also, the contract-based opportunities have it made it difficult for recent graduates to secure permanent jobs.

What are your views on the EXIT exam for getting registered as a pharmacist?

Already B. Pharm graduates have to apply for GPAT exam to secure M. Pharm admission in government colleges. Adding an additional EXIT exam for getting registered as a Pharmacist adds upon their burden.

Do you think pharmacists are underpaid?

Yes, Pharmacists are indeed underpaid in India as compared to other professions like engineering.

Is there a healthy work-life balance in your profession?

In India, as a fresher in a new company, one is expected to dedicatedly work for a period of 8-9 hrs. There is no compensation for overtime and in most of the Pharma companies, there is just one holiday per week. This is surely not a health work-life balance for someone who is just learning the talk of the trade.
