The situation became more serious when a video of Xiaoyu went viral on the Chinese social media platform WeChat. In the video, she messaged her boyfriend to turn on his WeChat camera and called him over 100 times in a single day. When he did not respond to the calls she became intensely upset and started damaging household objects. Worrying about her safety her boyfriend immediately contacted the cops. When the police reached the location Xiaoyu was reportedly threatening to jump from the balcony. She was immediately taken to the hospital. The doctors at the hospital diagnosed her with borderline personality disorder.

Dr. Du Na who treated Xiaoyu at the Fourth People's Hospital in Chengdu said that Xiaoyu's condition might co-occur with other mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. The doctor also implied that this type of condition might be connected with unhealthy childhood traumas. People suffering from a mild form of this condition can recover on their own and they can also find ways to manage their own emotions. But, severe cases require medical treatment.

People are responding to Xiaoyu's diagnosis in varied ways. One user said "Love brain sounds horrible" and another user said, "Isn't she just a control freak?".
