AI Coffee Reading Sparks Divorce Drama in Greece

When AI Meets Ancient Ritual: A Marriage Unravels

MBT Desk

In a strange twist on traditional dating technology, recently a Greek woman has filed for divorce after allegedly uncovering her husband's infidelity with the help of ChatGPT. The woman utilized an AI chatbot to interpret leftover coffee grounds, conducting a digital version of tasseography, an age-old means of fortune-telling.

What started as a playful experiment in ancient-world superstition turned serious when the woman claimed ChatGPT showed her husband was having a love affair with a younger woman.

Coffee, Codes, and Conflict

A wife of more than 12 years and mother of two, the woman allegedly posted photos of coffee cup stains from hers and her husband's cups and asked ChatGPT to "read" them. The AI did not hold back, she claimed. He allegedly predicted a romantic relationship with another unknown woman who went by the letter "E" alone and was her husband's "soulmate.".

Her own reading showed infidelity and growing disorder in her home, and this led her to confront her husband.

Husband Denies Claims, Blames Trend Obsession

The husband called the whole experience ridiculous, speaking to a local Greek TV station.

"I laughed it off as nonsense. But she took it seriously. She asked me to leave, told our kids we were getting divorced, and then I got a call from a lawyer. That's when I realised this wasn't just a phase," he said.
A 2019 Japanese study published in the Journal of Social Psychology found that 19% of married women under 40 had consulted fortune tellers or spiritual advisors regarding their marriage decisions.

Can AI predict infidelity? Lawyers say no.

Though the case has stormed social media in Greece, legal professionals are advising restraint. The lawyer for the husband was clear that interpretations by AI, particularly those founded on fortune-telling techniques from centuries ago, carry no legal standing within a courtroom. "He is innocent until proven otherwise," said the lawyer.

Nevertheless, the woman went ahead and filed for divorce just three days after the AI’s alleged prediction, refusing to consider reconciliation or counseling.

A Modern Tale of Tech and Trust

The bizarre story has led to a broader debate on the use of AI in everyday life, specifically when it is being used to make very personal decisions. While AI can be of tremendous help with most things, experts warn against taking its findings as gospel truth, especially when it comes to affairs of the heart.
