Asia Safe Surgical Implant Consortium QIP Award 2023 Conferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar

AIIMS Bhubaneswar has been conferred by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the esteemed Asia Safe Surgical Implant Consortium QIP Award 2023.

The AIIMS Bhubaneswar has received this prestigious award for its notable work on the quality of instruments and reprocessing of implants in the hospital.

The key objective of this program was to set and monitor the highest standards of quality for the reprocessing of various instruments and implants in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) of the hospital.

Twenty-eight reputed hospitals from all over Asia participated in this program. However, AIIMS Bhubaneswar appeared to be the best hospital. For the first time, AIIMS Bhubaneswar from India secured the first position since the inception of this program.

The whole program was facilitated by 3M India, which played a pivotal role in its execution in different countries along with India.

Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, along with the Medical Superintendent, Chairman of the OT Committee, Dean Academics, Dean Examination, faculty members, administrative and CSSD staff, nursing in-charges of various OTs, and members of the Infection Control Committee of AIIMS Bhubaneswar,r received the coveted award collectively in the presence of Ujwala Paul, Head Clinical Specialist, Puja Pal, Regional Clinical Specialist, and other esteemed members of 3M India.

From the side of WHO, Prof. Seto Wing Hong, Co-Director, Patricia Cing, Principal Nurse, WHO C.C., School of Public Health, University of Hong Kong, Rajiv Gupta, Country Business Head, and other 3M India members attended the program virtually.

It may be remarked here that around 2,500 packets are processed daily basis in the CSSD unit of AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The CSSD unit is Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (CAHO) accredited. Sterilization is done through autoclaving, plasma techniques, and EtO (ethylene oxide) techniques. It is validated by all three means—physical, chemical, and biological indicators. Remarkably, the CSSD unit plays a significant role in surgical safety and hospital-acquired infection prevention.

Dr. Ashutosh Biswas added that the award will certainly encourage them to maintain standards of patient safety.
