A recent survey conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken center stage and brought forth the issues faced by Indian parents regarding the conduct and education of their children. The survey, conducted to enhance the parent-child-school relationship, collected views of 13,000 parents from around the country.
The results showed 40.1% of parents having trouble with their child's behavior from time to time and 54.45% of parents being assured of handling them. Nevertheless, 5% of parents confessed that they need additional assistance in managing behavior difficulties.
Regarding academic matters, 53.5% of parents expressed confidence in assisting their children, whereas 40.9% admitted to facing difficulties at times, and 5.65% indicated a need for extra help.
Parental Awareness and Concerns:
When evaluating parental awareness, 43.5% of respondents stated they fully understand how their parenting choices impact their child's development. Meanwhile, 36.8% showed a desire to learn more, and 19.7% admitted they were still navigating the complexities of parenting.
Parents are highly concerned about their children's academic success. Yet, many are also aware that becoming emotionally and socially developed can be as important for their children.
As far as school support is concerned, 49% of parents have the opinion that schools provide sufficient support to link learning and parenting. However, 29.5% of parents believe schools should provide more support in this sense.
It asked parents about their desire to cooperate with schools. Approximately 32% welcomed the prospect of training sessions and workshops, and 21.4% wished to always consult with teachers.
Regions Where Parents Seek Assistance:
The survey indicated a few domains in which parents require assistance. Approximately 13.7% of the respondents indicated that they require academic assistance for their children, and 12.3% indicated that they require assistance in educating their children in social skills.
Moreover, 12.15% of parents stated that patience and offering constructive feedback are crucial in child rearing. Time management, study skills, communication, and establishing rules and boundaries are also other concerns they share.
For kindergarten children, parents work on tantrum management, emotional regulation, and developing resilience. For students in Grades 1-2, there is a focus on creating an environment at home that is conducive to reading, inculcating empathy, and establishing definite boundaries. For students in Grades 3-5, focus areas are centered around logical reasoning, decision-making, online safety, and self-discipline.
As students move into Grades 6-8, the top concerns are adolescence, peer pressure, and cyberbullying. Parents in Grades 9-12 have difficulty with stress management, minimizing distractions, discussing relationships and safety, and career guidance.
CBSE stated that the survey was undertaken to understand the prevailing parenting trends and to understand where additional support would be required. The findings emphasize the need for increased collaboration between schools and parents so that children reach their full potential.
