A Maui-based doctor has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly pushing his wife off a hiking trail in Hawaii and attacking her with a rock. Authorities said the shocking incident allegedly stemmed from a dispute over a photo.
Attack at Pali Lookout:
Anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, 46, was vacationing in Oahu with his wife, 36-year-old nuclear engineer Arielle Konig. The couple was at Pali Lookout, a popular panoramic viewpoint, when the situation turned violent. Law enforcement sources claim Konig became enraged when his wife refused to take a photo with him, leading to the brutal attack.
According to reports, he allegedly pushed her off the hiking trail before repeatedly punching her and throwing rocks at her head. At one point, he even tried to inject her with two syringes, although it's unclear if they contained any substances.
The victim is in critical condition:
Ariel Koenig suffered serious injuries to her face and head and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The alleged attack happened on Monday morning, prompting an immediate response from the Honolulu Police Department.
Arrest after foot chase:
Konig was arrested after a foot chase near Pali Highway around 6:45 a.m. Monday, about eight hours after the incident. Authorities temporarily closed Pali Lookout for the rest of the day while they investigated the scene.
The doctor was suspended pending an investigation:
Koenig has been suspended from his medical duties following the allegations. Maui Health, the organization that oversees the facilities where he worked, issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to patient safety.
We have been made aware of the allegations against Gerhardt Konig, MD. Dr. Konig has been suspended from the Medical Staff pending an investigation. The case continues to unravel as authorities gather more details about the disturbing incident.
FBI data indicates that nearly 40% of female murder victims in the U.S. are killed by an intimate partner. Crime statistics show that 1 in 10 violent crimes against tourists occur in remote or scenic locations, such as hiking trails or viewpoints.
