Doctor Reveals the ‘Real Plight of Medical Students’ in AIIMS Madurai

On April 11, Dr. Dhruv Chauhan shed light on the multiple struggles faced by medical students at AIIMS Madurai. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the alleged plight of students in the college. The wards in the college are empty with no patients for clinical examination. The students are forbidden to visit the OPD and OT. The college library does not have any other books other than the first-year books. Moreover, the lack of proper accommodation facilities has forced several students to share a single room. The existing condition of the institution doesn’t live up to the esteemed reputation of AIIMS.

The dismal state of the college is the result of the ‘opening of many medical colleges without any basic facilities’. The doctor also wrote that the medical students had approached the director requesting to get them shifted. Upon complaining to the administration, they were countered with questions on why they joined AIIMS Madurai in the first place.

Sharing a poignant stance and elaborating on the condition of a leading institution like AIIMS having empty wards, the doctor raised concerns about the caliber of doctors likely to emerge with such scant patient interactions.

The post has garnered a large number of views since its sharing. Many of them have reverted in the comment section of the post sharing their thoughts and experiences on such similar instances.

One of the users replied to the post, “This isn’t the story of just AIIMS Madurai, but every new medical college in India. Faculty crunch (Even reputed colleges have a crunch). Lack of Infrastructure. Lack of Equipment. Non-functional IPDs. This is what happens when quantity is prioritized over quality.”
