On Monday night, a doctor at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital (BBMCH) in Bolangir district was allegedly thrashed by the attendants and family members of a patient who died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The attendants of the patient alleged that the on-duty doctor was in an intoxicated condition.

The deceased, Niku Barik from the Kandhapalipara area in Bolangir, fell ill on Monday night and was brought to the BBMCH around 5 p.m. by his family. As per the reports, Niku needed blood. Niku’s family alleged that despite arranging blood immediately and waiting for more than three hours with the blood packets, no doctor came to treat him, resulting in the death of Niku. Family members also alleged that even the nurses on duty did not give him blood.

After Barik’s death, his family members searched for the doctor and allegedly found him in an intoxicated condition. And one of them started thrashing the doctor. Subsequently, the security guards intervened and rescued him.

Tension increased in the hospital after the attack. The hospital authorities have not yet made any comment on this matter.

Upon receiving the information on this matter, the hospital superintendent ordered an investigation into the matter. A five-member team will be constituted to investigate the matter, and necessary actions will be taken on the basis of the report.

Such incidents highlight concerns about the quality of patient care and the conduct of medical professionals.

A few days ago, house surgeons of Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital staged a cease-work protest at the hospital premises over an alleged assault on a colleague. House surgeons alleged that a miscreant identified as Samir Badamali from Rajendrapara in Bolangir assaulted house surgeon Biswaranjan Sahu.
