Emergency Brain Surgery at Wockhardt Hospitals Saves 16-year-old Girl

Mysterious disease takes a turn for the worse

Author : MBT Desk

Mild symptoms of headache, vomiting, and loss of balance soon developed into a life-threatening crisis for a 16-year-old girl in early January. She was first misdiagnosed with simple conditions like food poisoning and typhoid, but her condition soon worsened.

Shocking diagnosis: A large brain tumor

An MRI scan showed a startling revelation - a heart-shaped tumor stuck in the cerebellum. The tumor was obstructing critical pathways of fluid, leading to perilously high intracranial pressure and putting her life at risk.

While she was worsening, the patient involuntarily lost consciousness. The team of doctors at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central, spearheaded by Dr. Mazda K. Torel, Consultant Brain and Spine Surgeon, rushed into action.

In 2020, approximately 308,102 new cases of brain and central nervous system (CNS) cancers were diagnosed worldwide, with 251,329 related deaths, and brain tumors are the most common cancer in children and adolescents aged 0-19 years in the U.S.
Dr. Turrel emphasized the time factor involved:
Delaying intervention in such cases can be fatal. When the patient suddenly became unresponsive, we immediately took her to the operating room. The first step was to relieve the brain pressure by draining cerebrospinal fluid, which instantly revived her. The following morning, we successfully removed the tumor, restoring normal brain function. She recovered well and was discharged in perfect health
"Thank you for saving my daughter's life. This new year has really given us a fresh start," he said in appreciation of the medical team's work.

A fresh start for the family

At first apprehensive about the surgery, the patient's father was thankful following the surgery.
