Gurugram: 70-Year-Old Patient with Cardiac Issues Successfully Undergoes Innovative Hernia Surgery

A complex surgery reveals the true skill of Srinagar’s medical team

Team of Doctors in Gurugram, successfully perform surgery on an elderly patient, Ghanshyam Thakur who was 70 years of age. He had a large, recurrent abdominal hernia, compounded by severe cardiac issues. presenting as an incisional hernia in march of 2024 the hernia had grown so large that the overlying skin began ulcerating, necessitating immediate surgical intervention.

Since Thakur had a severe heart condition, this made him a high-risk candidate for surgery but operating could not be ignored as there was a risk of skin rupture and exposed bowel loops.

Dr. Mriganka Sekhar Sharma, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram explained that this was not a conventional hernia. Hence, a special procedure known as Posterior Component Separation with Transversus Abdominis Release (PCS TAR) had to be done which is a surgical technique for repairing large, complex ventral hernias by separating abdominal wall layers and releasing the transversus abdominis muscle to enhance tissue for closure.

Dr. Sharma added that it allows the surgeons to pull the separated muscles together over the hernia defect, creating a stronger and more durable repair. she also clarifies that PCS TAR is often preferred for large hernias as it reduces the risk of recurrence and improves abdominal wall function.

This case was particularly high risk as Achieving a tension-free closure of the abdominal muscles is demanding, in patients with cardiac or lung problems.(Representational image: Pixabay)

This case was particularly high risk, as achieving a tension-free closure of the abdominal muscles is challenging in patients with cardiac or lung issues, like Ghanshyam Thakur.
