In a major operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted an interstate drug smuggling network, seizing 16 kilograms of mephedrone (commonly referred to as “Meow Meow”), valued at an astonishing Rs 160 crore on the black market. Five suspects, including a 71-year-old man, have been arrested in connection with the crime. The seizure highlights the increasing use of long-distance transport for trafficking synthetic drugs.

The operation began with the DRI’s Mumbai Zonal Unit receiving intelligence about a drug consignment being transported from Hyderabad to Mumbai via bus. Acting swiftly, officials mounted surveillance early Tuesday morning at the Vashi flyover bus stop in Navi Mumbai. Their diligence paid off when two suspects, Ravi and Manish Baradwal, were intercepted during routine checks. The duo was traveling aboard a Hyderabad-to-Mumbai bus, attempting to smuggle the contraband across state lines.

Rs 1.93 Crore in Cash Recovered

During the search of the suspects’ luggage, officials discovered 16 kilograms of a powdered substance. Laboratory tests quickly confirmed it as mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant popular in underground drug markets. Known for its addictive properties, the drug poses a significant risk to public health and safety. Following their confession, the investigation widened to include other key players in the racket.

The duo’s interrogation revealed the names of three more individuals linked to the operation. This led to the apprehension of Mahesh Kharwa, a Vadodara resident who had traveled to Mumbai to collect the smuggled goods. In another surprising turn, authorities also arrested 71-year-old Sultan Ahmed Abdul Latif Shaikh, a Mumbai-based operative suspected of facilitating the drug distribution.

A total of Rs 1.93 crore in cash was seized from three of the accused, believed to be proceeds from previous drug sales. All five individuals were taken into custody under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They now face serious legal consequences.

A Coordinated Crackdown on Synthetic Drugs

This successful operation is part of the DRI’s larger effort to combat the growing synthetic drug trade, which has seen a spike in the use of stimulants like mephedrone. Synthetic drugs, often manufactured in clandestine labs, are favored by smugglers for their high profit margins and relative ease of transportation compared to traditional narcotics.

“The seizure of 16 kilograms of mephedrone is a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking. It sends a strong message to smuggling networks that law enforcement is vigilant and relentless,” an official with the DRI’s Mumbai team said.rugs

Mephedrone, often disguised in powdered form, is a psychoactive substance with stimulant effects similar to amphetamines. Its growing popularity in urban nightlife has made it a target for drug enforcement agencies. This bust, one of the largest in recent times, highlights the scale of operations involved in the smuggling trade.

One of the more shocking aspects of this case was the involvement of a 71-year-old man, raising questions about the strategies and desperation of drug cartels. Authorities believe that older operatives are often recruited to evade suspicion. “The inclusion of senior citizens in smuggling networks shows how cunningly traffickers exploit vulnerabilities to achieve their goals,” remarked another DRI official.

Criminal Network Under Scrutiny

As the investigation continues, officials are working to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network. Early indications suggest that the drugs may have originated from a larger syndicate operating across multiple states. This bust not only sheds light on the logistics of the trade but also underscores the importance of inter-agency coordination in tackling drug-related crime.

While the suspects face prosecution, the operation stands as a testament to the efficiency and resolve of the DRI. By intercepting the consignment and seizing a massive haul of cash, authorities have dealt a significant blow to the smuggling operations, safeguarding public health and safety.
