Missouri Man Confesses to Chocking Hospitalized Wife Over Medical Bills

According to court documents, at first, Mrs. Wiggs was discovered by hospital staff to be conscious and attentive.

Ronnie Wiggs, a 75-year-old man from Independence, Missouri, confesses that he attempted to murder his hospitalized wife. Wiggs appeared in court facing a second-degree murder charge, bringing attention to a terrible event motivated by financial desperation.

The victim, identified as Ellen Wiggs, 72, was undergoing medical treatment at CenterPoint Medical Center in Independence when the incident occurred. She was admitted for a routine procedure to replace a port for her dialysis treatment. But what happened next transformed a routine medical appointment into a terrifying event.

According to court documents, at first, Mrs. Wiggs was discovered by hospital staff to be conscious and attentive. However, a medical emergency was indicated, and a "code blue" was called soon after. Mrs. Wiggs was found to be unconscious and without a pulse. She was eventually declared brain dead despite attempts to revive her, and procedures were initiated to remove her organs.

In a subsequent police interview, Wiggs admitted to choking his wife, explaining that he covered her mouth and nose to prevent her from screaming. He revealed his depressive and extreme financial problems, attributing the crime to his inability to pay for his wife's medical expenses. Wiggs now faces the legal repercussions of his actions, with a bond set at $250,000.
